A lot of history in Hermann yields from our home’s original owner. His photo hangs in the parlor. We owe a lot to him for constructing a beautiful home that stands on the National Registry of Historic Homes today.

On today's Who Who in Hermann History we celebrate August Wohlt, Hermann's very first mayor!
August Wohlt was born in Hermann in 1853 to parents Heinrich Wohlt and Christine Burkhard Wohlt. August, along with his brother Gustave, were shipwrights and captains by trade, like their father. The Wohlt family head, Captain Heinrich "Henry" Wohlt, and later the brothers August & Gustave, were river trade entrepreneurs who built and operated the Fawn steam ferry in 1880 and the Royal in 1884. They would eventually join the Heckmanns to create the Hermann Ferry & Packet Company in 1886.
In 1877, August married Caroline Sperry. They had two children, both who would die in childhood. They would later adopt another child, Elsa in 1890.
In 1888, in the "History of Gasconade County, Missouri" publication, August was said to "never to aspire to official positions, and is a hard working, industrious citizen".
Despite this description, August would find himself Hermann's first mayor in 1905 and would serve until 1908. The Hermann Ferry and Packet Company would name a sternwheel packet after him in 1909 that operated on the Missouri River until at least 1922. August died in 1927 and was buried in Hermann Cemetery.
