A little scene tucked into the cabinet…

I love mixing collections with pieces that make them feel like part of a story. Here, the Scotties seem to have wandered right into a tiny veterinarian’s office.

It is these little unexpected combinations that make decorating so much fun for me.

A Little Scottie Love 🐾

Some collections begin quite intentionally. Others simply seem to find us.

Over the years, these little Scotties have made their way into our home in all sorts of forms — carved wood, metal, old cards, pins, little trays, books and figurines. Some are wonderfully worn, some are whimsical, and each one seems to have its own personality.

I especially love finding Scotties on useful everyday pieces. Somehow that makes them even more charming.

Collections don’t have to be grand or valuable to be special. Sometimes the smallest things are the ones that make us smile every time we see them.

History of a Collection

It isn’t always a Scottie! 🐾

After sharing some of my Scottie treasures this week, I thought I should confess—they don't have every shelf to themselves!

Over the years, other little dogs have found their way into my collections as well. Different breeds, different ages, different materials—and each seems to have its own personality.

I love mixing them among old books, embroidered linens and other collected treasures rather than lining everything up together.

Perhaps that is why I enjoy collecting so much. I never really know what little treasure is going to find its way home with me next. ❤️

Some of the sweetest treasures in a collection can’t be found in an antique shop. ❤️

After collecting Scotties for almost 50 years, some of my favorites are the ones made especially for me.

My uncle made this stained-glass Scottie. My daughter embroidered Scotties for me, and when my son was only five years old, he stitched little Scottie samplers of his own. Through the years, dear friends have even painted Scotties for my collection.

They may have joined a collection—but what I really see when I look at them are the people who made them. ❤️

The Story Behind the Scotties…

I fell in love with Scotties when I was a little girl. My aunt and uncle had a Scottie who was very much a part of the family—he even “signed” birthday cards with his paw print!

When Gary and I were first married, we had a Scottie of our own named Bonnie. She was very mischievous and loved wandering off on exciting little adventures!

Somewhere along the way, that childhood love of Scotties became a collection. I started gathering Scottie treasures almost 50 years ago, and today they can be found tucked into little corners throughout our home.

Some collections begin because we simply love beautiful things. Others begin with a memory. This one began with both. ❤️

✨ Favorite Detail ✨

Gary and I discovered this beautiful hand-crocheted lace at one of our favorite antique stores.

Walking through the door of this store is almost like stepping back in time. Two floors fill a historic building, complete with a grand staircase, antique cabinetry and even old store stock dating back to the 1800s. The first time we visited, I thought it must be a museum—or that surely I couldn't afford anything!

Much to my delight, I was wrong. ❤️

On one visit, I spotted three pieces of this lovely, deep hand-crocheted lace. And amazingly, each piece was exactly the width I needed for one of the three windows in our Schiller Strasse Parlor Suite.

I knew immediately that I wanted to design the curtains around the lace.

For the fabric, I chose natural drop cloths because they had the look and texture of linen. They were extremely heavy and had to be prewashed, so making these curtains was certainly not an easy little project!

But oh, was it worth it.

Today that beautiful old handwork has a new purpose, framing the windows of a room where it looks as though it might have been all along.

Sometimes my favorite details are the ones that simply seem meant to be. ❤️

A Little Personal History…

When I was about eight years old—perhaps even younger—my Mama had a yard sale. Family members contributed things to sell, and among them I spotted this lovely little pitcher.

I had never seen a square pitcher before. I adored the colorful flowers painted on it, so I used some of my piggy bank money and bought it.

About a week later, my sweet Grandma Campbell asked Mama if she knew who had purchased the pitcher.

Mama told her, “Well, Laurie did.”

Grandma was so excited!

As I remember it, Grandma told Mama that the pitcher had been given to her by her Sunday School teacher when she was a little girl for memorizing her Bible verses. Suddenly, the little pitcher I had simply thought was beautiful became something much more precious.

I cherished it for many years.

Later in life, I knew how much joy it would bring my Mama to have something that had belonged to her mother, so I gave the pitcher to her. One Mother’s Day, I surprised her by filling it with pansies—her favorite flowers. Mama adored that pitcher.

When my Mama passed away, it came home to me once again.

Recently I told my granddaughter the story of the pitcher and, of course, about her great-great-grandmother, my Grandma Campbell. As I told her the story, I realized that this little pitcher has carried far more than flowers through the years.

It has carried love.

Grandma received it as a little girl.
I bought it as a little girl.
I gave it to my Mama with all the love in my heart.
And now another little girl in our family knows its story.

Giving brings such great joy. ❤️

And perhaps someday, someone else will tell the story of Grandma Campbell’s little square pitcher.
