WRD Retirees

WRD Retirees Retirees of the Water Resources Discipline, U.S. Geological Survey S. Geological Survey, Water Resources Division. Membership is open to anyone retired from USGS.

A welcoming message from the President

WRD Retirees is an organization of retirees from the U. The organization, founded in 1974, is run by retirees for retirees. Its principal purpose is to keep members in touch with each other and with their former agency. As of this December 2008, the organization was comprised of 1,410 members including surviving spouses and some 40 affiliate members. The nam

e was recently changed to USGS Retirees to include all disciplines. I think all of us that were long time employees of WRD know what an outstanding organization we retired from and have many interesting stories about the work we did and the people we worked with. WRD Retirees is an excellent way to maintain contact with our friends and colleagues, and also to keep up on what is going on in our former agency. An application form may be found elsewhere on the website. Also, please note that we have a membership category, "Affiliate Member". Affiliate members are (1) retirees from the Department of the Interior and its other bureaus, (2) retirees of Federal, State, or local organizations who have had long association with and desire to remain in contact with our members, or (3) other retired persons allied with USGS by professional background or activities. WRD Retirees has a contact person in all 50 states. Please see the list of District Contacts on this website. Please get in touch with the contact person in your state to learn about local activities which may include breakfasts or luncheons. Regular meetings are held at 40 locations around the U. The local contact person can tell you when and where these meetings are held. Plan to stay in touch with your friends and former colleagues by being an active member of WRD Retirees. You'll be glad you did! Herb Freiberger, President

Plan for the USGS retirees' biennial meeting Sept. 29-Oct. 2, 2025 in Tuscaloosa Alabama, conveniently located near the brand new HIF facility! There will be interesting tour of locks and dams acoustic Doppler flow measurements the HIF facility, etc. and likely a big College football game before or after.

We're a multi-tasking team. IT specialist Jon Porter got a taste of field work today helping hydrologic technician Rhonda Weakland collect water-quality samples in the River watershed. Sample collection is part of the ongoing monitoring we conduct in cooperation with the Lower Boise Watershed Council.

The USGS deserves as much credit as NASA, and the ongoing shenanigans at Kilauea, Yellowstone-(ish) and elsewhere demonstrate why.

"The revelation could give new momentum to legislation seeking to provide better protection to the federal employees, retirees and others whose personal information was stolen from two government databases in 2014, and spur lawmakers to consider broader safeguards for victims of similar compromises."

Time to let Congress know that we need help with protection. We can't cancel our identity like we would a credit card. I don't want to have this hanging over me when I'm 90+ and in my rocking chair on the porch.

Lawmakers want to protect the victims.

Our scientists were out early yesterday collecting samples and data for ongoing water-quality monitoring on behalf of the Lower Boise Watershed Council. In this photo, hydrologic technician Rhonda Weakland uses a sonde to collect data from Mill Slough. The effort will continue this week.
