A good Highlands day should end around a table.

Highlands Supper Club sits just up the hill from Trailborn in a historic log cabin built by Joe Webb, with multiple fireplaces, Southern comfort food, and a bar that leans toward bourbon, smoky flavors and very good reasons to stay for another round.

Come hungry after the trail. Order the biscuits. Get something strong from the bar. Let supper take as long as it takes.

The bear comes out of hibernation twice a year. And one of those times is right around the corner. 🐻🍂

For a few weeks each fall, the setting sun hits Whiteside Mountain at just the right angle to cast a shadow across the valley that looks remarkably like a bear. It starts as a small dark shape near the bottom of the valley, then slowly grows across the landscape until the full silhouette takes shape. The whole thing lasts only about 30 minutes before disappearing with the light.

🗺️ The place to go is Rhodes Big View Overlook on Highway 64 between Highlands and Cashiers.
⏱️ From mid-October through early November, the bear typically begins to emerge around 5:30 PM on clear, sunny afternoons.
⚡ Get there early; the roadside pull-off is small, and this local secret isn’t much of a secret anymore. Weekdays are your best bet for fewer crowds.

🐻 And if you miss it this fall, you get one more chance: the angle of the sun lines up again from mid-February through early March.

Traditional Nordic wellness practices follow a simple rhythm: heat, cold, rest, repeat.

🔥 Start with the sauna, where sustained warmth helps loosen muscles, encourage circulation, and release some of what you carried in from the day.

🧊 Follow the heat with a cold spritz, cooling the body and leaving you feeling refreshed and re-energized.

⏸️ Then, do nothing. Rest by the fire and give your body a few quiet minutes to settle before starting another round.

The point isn’t to rush through the cycle. It’s to leave feeling a little more restored than when you started. It’s a practice that feels especially at home in Highlands, where a slower pace feels like an indulgence all its own.
