The Calumet County Parks Department has recently hired some new staff! A herd of goats have joined our crew to help with our invasive species management. For many years, we have made efforts to manage invasive plant species like Buckthorn, Phragmites, Dame’s Rocket and Garlic Mustard. Goats have proven to be fantastic resources for handling invasive plants.

These are working goats and we ask that the public maintain their distance, please do not feed or pet the goats. They are working in a designated area with a GPS perimeter. While it might look like they are roaming free, we promise they do understand their boundary.

We look forward to updating you on their progress.

This beauty said hello to our Natural Resource Assistant the other day! It is the Red-spotted Purple butterfly (Limenitis arthemis), denoted by its striking blue-green markings on the outer wings and orange spots near the wing tips. Odd fact: This butterfly has a palette different from its relatives. It prefers decayed fruit, tree sap, and dung rather than flower nectar! It also mimics the appearance of another butterfly to pose as toxic to predators. When really, he doesn't possess this toxin.
