It’s Tuesday! Which means we have another hike just for you. 🌲 Grab your boots and head to the Iron Mountain Trail!

Just 15 minutes from Firehouse Campground, this 4.6-mile out-and-back near Keystone is a great way to get your legs moving and take in some classic Black Hills scenery. You’ll wind through shady pines, spot unique rock formations, and maybe even see a few horseback riders along the way.

This moderately challenging trail takes about 2 hours to complete and is popular for hiking, birdwatching, and exploring. One important note—dogs aren’t allowed, so plan ahead if you’re traveling with your pup. Horses are common here, so be ready to share the path.

• Best from March through October
• No dogs allowed

It's Tuesday, so it’s time for the next Hike of the Week!

Just 12.9 miles from Firehouse Campground, the Horsethief Lake Trail is a beautiful 5.4-mile out-and-back route near Keystone, South Dakota. This moderately challenging hike winds through the Black Hills National Forest, offering shady stretches, unique rock formations, and plenty of wildlife sightings.

You’ll start right at Horsethief Lake, where you can cast a line or just enjoy the view before hitting the trail. From there, a steady climb leads to gentle ups and downs with sweeping forest views. Parts of the path can be narrow and overgrown—long pants are recommended to keep your legs protected.

• 1,118 ft elevation gain
• Best from April through October
• Dogs welcome (on leash)
• Fishing permitted

Just 4.8 miles from Firehouse Campground, the Spring Creek & Flume Trail Loop is a 4.4-mile adventure near Keystone, South Dakota. This moderately challenging loop is a local favorite for hiking, birdwatching, and soaking up the beauty of the Black Hills. 🌲

Start by crossing the bridge, then wander through aspen groves, rocky sections, and narrow paths with gorgeous views of Sheridan Lake. Keep an eye out for historic carvings along the old flume tunnel—and plenty of spots for your pup to splash around and cool off. 🐾

Hike of the Week: Stratobowl Rim Trail 🌲

This easy out-and-back trail leads to one of the most unique overlooks in the Black Hills. From the edge of the Stratobowl, you’ll get sweeping views of the forest and the historic launch site where the first manned high-altitude balloon flights took off in the 1930s.

Only 13.6 miles (about 15 minutes) from Firehouse Campground, it’s a great spot for a short hike with big rewards.

• 1.7 miles round trip
• Easy, about 40 minutes
• Child friendly
• Dogs welcome (on leash)
• Birds, wildflowers, and mountain views
• Historic landmark at the overlook

Perfect for catching a sunset, stretching your legs, or learning a little local history before heading back to your campfire.

Introducing Hike of the Week! 🌲

We’re kicking off a brand-new series to help you discover some of our favorite trails near Firehouse Campground. First up: Willow Creek Trail, a 2.6-mile loop tucked in the Black Hills National Forest.

This easy, family-friendly trail is full of hidden gems—think waterfalls, wildflowers, and sweeping views of the pines. Keep an eye out for birds and horseback riders along the way. (We’d like to note this trail is heavily traveled by horses due to its proximity to Willow Creek Horse Camp.)

Quick Facts:
• Easy, about 1 hour
• Dog-friendly (on leash)
• Picnic spots to take a break
• Horseback riding common

Just a short drive from Hill City and Keystone, this trail makes the perfect morning adventure before you head back to relax at camp.
