On July 3, 1887, Queen Kapiʻolani and Princess Liliʻuokalani departed London earlier than planned, cutting short their European travels after attending Queen Victoria’s Jubilee.

In her memoir, Liliʻuokalani wrote:
“But after the news we received from home, our minds would not be at rest so on this day July 3, 1887, we bade adieu to the beautiful city of London, and took our departure from Liverpool.”

The news was deeply troubling—political unrest in Hawai‘i stirred by residents of mostly foreign descent who were organizing to seize control of the government and
remove King Kalākaua from power.

On June 25, 1890, Kamehameha School for Boys welcomed King Kalākaua, Charles R. Bishop, Archibald S. Cleghorn, and others for morning recitations held in the school gymnasium. That afternoon, 48 keiki kāne showcased their academic skills through classroom demonstrations and subject exams, earning high praise from the Pacific Commercial Advertiser. Guests also viewed impressive student work in wood and metal shops, as well as mechanical and freehand drawings.

The following evening, the school held its closing exercises at Kawaiahaʻo Church before a standing-room-only crowd that included Princess Liliʻuokalani. The program featured music, speeches, and blackboard demonstrations—one called Fractions on Fire was a crowd favorite.

Among the students was Charles E. King, who presented his composition, My Year in Carpentry. He would go on to become one of Hawaiʻi’s most well-known composers.

The eruption that re-started this morning at the summit of Kīlauea volcano continues this afternoon, with fountaining happening from the south vent as well as the north vent in Halemaʻumaʻu crater.

The park is very busy! Park rangers urge everyone to and stay safe:

🌋Check the park’s eruption viewing webpage for safety tips, air quality, best viewing areas, and more. https://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/eruption-viewing.htm

🌋Expect crowds. Parking will be full at popular areas. The park is open 24 hours a day. Arrive after 9 p.m. or before sunrise to avoid the crowds. Bring a flashlight if you visit when it’s dark.

🌋Stay on trail! Stay out of closed areas. Avoid cliff edges and other hazardous terrain. Keep your children near you at all times.

🦆 Watch for nēnē. It is breeding season for the rare Hawaiian goose. Nēnē are often seen in parking lots and near roadways. Drive cautiously, never feed them and keep a distance of at least 60 feet (4 car lengths).

🚗 Drive safely. Drive the speed limit, heed park rangers and traffic control workers, and stay attentive.

🌋Admire with respect. Eruptions are powerful events as Pele, the elemental volcanic force, returns to Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Observe eruptions quietly to hear the sounds of lava.
