The Hunter's Moon is coming up, and we get two good nights of it. On Sunday the 25th it rises in the east near sunset, already nearly full. On Monday the 26th it climbs again about an hour after sunset, just past peak — peak light lands at 12:12 AM.

A full moon over the water, a quiet beach, a late night on the porch. That's the rhythm of life here when you stay a while.

In 1999, I drove past four neglected beach cottages and a house on Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach. Something tugged at me, a gut feeling. It was way over budget. We bought it anyway with all we got. The island is a speck in the ocean. What were you sure about until real life proved you wrong?

I hear it on last mornings, over an open car trunk, sometimes with tears. That’s stage one, and it’s a good place to start.
Stage two is where the dream can stall. “When I retire.” The plan is real. The date isn’t.

Stage four doesn’t have to mean buying a house. It means you stopped waiting for the date.
