The Grand Journey...Blog 1
This week began a new journey for the Hotel Josephine piano. This first leg of the journey wasn't originally planned, as often was the case with the Hotel Josephine, but we needed a little temporary storage for her. Thanks to 11 bodies, this evening we were able to get this 1000 pound beauty moved to a temporary location off-site. We're anxious to share her upcoming journey with you.

Many of you have embraced this beauty if you've walked through the Hotel Josephine lobby over the years. She was not an original piece on site as many often think. We understand she arrived appx 40 years ago as an acquisition from previous owners. Her builder? The J & C Fischer Piano Company of New York. Thanks to our Estate Sale team, they were able to uncover the serial number dating the piano circa 1873, covered in almost 100 years of dust inside the core. While we fell in love with the hotel, I'll be honest it was the piano that solidified our purchase years ago. When we purchased the hotel in 2020 we made a number of calls across the country, including to Piano Tuner Specialists, and no one wanted to touch it. We were told since it had been rebuilt at one point, possibly in the 1940s - 1950s, the liability to retune could damage further any original parts and still not be guaranteed to play properly. The cost just to tune the piano to play could be upwards of $10,000. So, with all the needs on the hotel at the time, the tuning was pushed back as an unfortunate lesser priority.

As the recent transition of hotel continued, we had some sleepless nights over what to do with this beauty. We researched Kansas firms and restoration companies across the country. Until last May we found the Antique Piano Shop out of Tennessee. The owners helped us fill in a number of holes and they are the only professional, complete reconstruction specialists in the country for this age, even hand making all parts. While she looks perfect in every way, shape and form, she does need much customization to bring her back to her original standard. So our team and family made a decision to invest in the full restoration of this beautiful piece and ship her off to Tennessee for this massive undertaking. Ultimately making her available for a new home...a new story...perhaps even a new hotel where she will experience her next 150 years. We've been told this will be a 2 to 4 year process. There was a wooden piece about 6 inches wide, curved and stated City Hotel. It was in the basement in the well room and we hoped it would come up during our massive reorganization this past 4 weeks. Unfortunately it never transpired. Leaving us to believe one of the members from the past groups this year would have taken it. This is a historical piece that goes to another piece donated to the Historical Society. We would really like it back. Stealing is just kind of a shoddy thing to do anyway. Please just get it back in our hands as soon as possible, no questions asked. Thank you
