VanHammen Cottages

VanHammen Cottages Bob and Esther VanHammen founded VanHammen Cottages in 1960 located on Big Platte Lake. We offer four-season family fun! Off season is $120 a night.

Come and enjoy the tranquility of Platte Lake. Peak season (Memorial Day to Labor Day) is $1,400 a week. Call Rick Van Hammen at 231-325-2305 for reservations. Our resort features three family vacation cabins on an acre of land with 180’ of frontage on the north shore of beautiful Big Platte Lake. Each cabin has two double beds and a bunk bed, a kitchen with all cooking utensils, and modern bathro

om. Each cabin also has a charcoal grill and picnic table. Bring your own linens and towels. Free wireless Internet. Please note: No smoking and no pets in our lakefront cottages! Big Platte Lake, a 2500 acre all-sports lake, is ideal for swimming boating and fishing. Our private, sandy beach is an ideal water-playground for children because of an extensive shallow area, perfect for frolicking, wading, and floating. In the deeper water farther out there is a raft for swimming. Use any of our 4 kayaks, 5 canoes or the rowboat that comes with your cottage and go kayaking, canoeing, or fishing for walleye, bass, northern pike and panfish. Bring your own equipment and go sailing, water-skiing, windsurfing or jet-skiing. Play a game of horseshoes at the shoreline. Shoot some hoops on our basketball court. Relax in the lawn swings. Toast s'mores around the fire circle as you enjoy breath-taking sunset views over the lake. We also have a classic log cabin nestled in the woods just across the road on Little Platte Lake. Little Platte Lake is a scenic 805-acre lake with quiet, natural beauty, eagles, loons, beaver and great fishing for bass and panfish. The lakes are connected by the Dead Stream and Platte River, which offer excellent canoeing/kayaking and fishing. Our resort is in a wooded area, adjacent to the awesome Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore with its world-famous 'Dune Climb' and Pierce-Stocking Scenic Drive. The white sand beaches of Lake Michigan, where you can swim, walk the shoreline or hunt Petoskey stones, are just 10 minutes away. We are open year-round for summer vacations, fall hunting and fishing, winter skiing and snowmobiling and morel mushroom hunting in the spring. The area boasts many quaint lakeside towns with wineries, shopping, arts & antiquing, dining, etc. The area offers arts and music at Interlochen Arts Academy, winery tours, golfing, casinos and sightseeing. You can take the family to a drive-in movie theater for family oriented movies at the Cherry Bowl. Tour the lighthouse at Point Betsie. The nearby village of Honor features restaurants, a grocery store, bank, post office, gas station, and video rentals. the Trading Post, which has a deli, pizza & ice cream, as well as bait & tackle, is a short walk from our cottages. We are only 15 miles from Empire (antiques, beaches, hiking trails) 15 miles to Frankfort (charter fishing, glider rides, shops and restaurants, and 4th of July fireworks) 20 miles to Glen Arbor (galleries, cute shops, restaurants) 15 miles to Crystal Mountain Resort (golf, Michigan Legacy Art Park, #1-rated ski resort in the Midwest) 18 miles to Interlochen (concerts, theater, exhibits, arts camp, arts academy) 25 miles to Traverse City (airport, more restaurants, casinos and shopping at outlet and other malls and of course the National Cherry Festival) 30 miles to Arcadia Bluffs ( #1-rated Golf Course in Michigan according to Golf Magazine). Many cross-country ski and snowmobile trails are only minutes away.

Early spring is a great time to be at the VanHammen Cottages: The ice on the lake is melting which attracts lots of waterfowl and other wildlife, no docks on the lake yet, and it is pretty quiet except for the sound of ducks, geese, swans, and loons. These photos were taken two weeks ago, March 28-30. Later spring is wonderful too. Call Rick for reservations at 231-325-2305. We have many openings between now and the end of June.
