Location
Sanderson House is located within a village in the town of Great Barrington, Massachusetts in Berkshire County. The property is central to everything, yet nicely off the beaten path. The village (Housatonic) is a quiet hamlet that was once a booming textile mill town. The mills closed in the mid-1950’s. What remains is a community of 900 people — long-time residents, artists, writers, you
ng families and a few businesses. Those who live here care passionately about preserving the history and sense of community. Sanderson House sits on five acres of land in the middle of the village. We’re steps to the post office, library, an award-winning bakery, three restaurants, art galleries, and two general stores, one of which sells alcohol. The Main House
Our house was built in 1892 by a mill owner, named James T. He called his estate “Biltmore.” The name is a bit grand for us, so we named it after ourselves, The Sandersons. It’s a 9,000 square ft. Queen Anne Victorian, with a wrap-around porch. There are several unique touches to the house — the platform which was used to exit the horse carriages, the original hand-painted porcelain sinks, the whistle-pipe intercom, the gas/electric chandeliers and the original banister lamp. Situated just behind the main house is a recently renovated 2000 sq. carriage house. The carriage house is a two-bedroom, 2-bath house with an open-concept living room, large dining area and kitchen
Behind the buildings is a wee creek, then about an acre of open space dotted with some beautiful, mature trees. There’s a large wooded area with a walking trail. Hikes can be taken directly from the property. The Innkeepers
Lisa Newmann and Sandy Sanderson are husband and wife. Lisa is originally from Boston, and is responsible for the food, the garden and the décor of the house. Sandy is from Toronto. He is handy around the house, and keeps the paint from peeling and the grass from growing too high.
