International Day of Sign Language

Last week our After School students learned three things: how to sign yes, how to sign please, and how to spell their own name.

One girl practiced her name sign until every letter matched. A group of students started modeling yes together. By the afternoon, please had become the way half the room was asking for a snack.

A new way to communicate is still communication. That's the whole idea behind the day, and our students picked it up fast.

Our counselors are trained to watch first weeks closely, not because a hard start is a problem, but because it's often where the most growth begins.

"Purposeful growth" isn't a slogan on a wall. It shows up in specific choices: free choice time that's structured, not just downtime with a name; a counselor who asks a follow-up question instead of moving on; a schedule built around trying something again instead of giving up after one attempt.

None of it looks dramatic in the moment. All of it adds up by the end of the semester.

That's the difference between a program that keeps kids busy and one that's building something.

About a month into the school year, here's what it actually looks like when the after school routine is clicking.

They can tell you what they did, not just that they had a good time. They've started asking for a specific counselor by name. They bring something up without being asked.

These tend to show up around now, not day one.

National Pet Rock Day

Earlier this month our students created their very own pet rocks. No two rocks were the same, each one unique in its own way.

One boy built his own landscape, going well beyond just a pet rock. One girl took her time getting her rock's smile just right. Another kid's rock ended up with beautiful eyelashes, cute ears, and googly eyes. There was no example for them, just a rock and some art supplies.

That's the actual point of the day like this. A rock with no instructions becomes pure creativity. What a kid does with it, unprompted, matters more than any supplies we hand them.
