Hudson Valley Bass Anglers (HVBA)

Hudson Valley Bass Anglers (HVBA) Under the leadership of President Leon Cotte, Vice President Edson Bennent and Secretary-Treasurer Paul Colarusso. New members welcome.

Eight avid anglers from Columbia County got together on Nov. 1, 1984 to form the Hudson Valley Bassmasters, affiliated with National B.A.S.S and the New York State Bass Federation. Other charter members were Roy Thomas, Richard Ohl, David Colarusso, James Whitbeck and Charles Graham. The 14-member club kicked off its first season on the third Saturday in June 1985 with a draw tournament at Copake

Lake. In 1988, the club dropped its affiliation with B.A.S.S. and the state federation and was forced to change its name to Hudson Valley Bass Anglers, which it still carries today. The club continued using draw pairings for tournaments until about 1999 when it switched to partners events to attract new members and bolster the social aspect of the events. We currently fish on bodies of water in western CT and eastern upstate NY. Anyone interested in fishing or looking for more information please contact us at [email protected].

🐟 Candlewood Cold Front Classic – May 3, 2026 Recap 🐟

If anyone was hoping for an easy spring day on Candlewood…this wasn’t it. Wind hammered the lake from start to finish, temps were cool, boat control was sketchy at best, and some anglers even reported seeing snow in May. Apparently winter forgot to check the calendar.

Despite the conditions, a few teams managed to put together some really solid bags while some of the field spent most of the day wondering where the fish went.

🥇 Mark & Kerry took the win in convincing fashion with a stout 19.42 lb bag, powered by a giant 5.09 lb largemouth. They found the right fish and made it count on a day where every bite felt earned.

🥈 Matt & Steve stayed consistent and locked down second with 15.04 lbs, mixing green and brown bass to stay near the top all day.

🥉 Mark & Eric rounded out the top three with 13.51 lbs, quietly grinding out another strong finish while boats were getting blown sideways.

🏆 Lunker of the Day goes to Mark & Kerry with that chunky 5.09 lb largemouth...the kind of fish that makes the cold fingers worth it.

🐟 HVBA 2026 Season Opener – Candlewood Lake | April 18, 2026 Recap 🐟

And just like that… we’re back.

The 2026 HVBA season got rolling on Candlewood with a no-points opener, giving everyone a chance to shake off the rust, test some ideas, and remember that what worked last year probably doesn’t anymore. Conditions were decent, the fish were cooperative for some, and a few teams wasted no time making a statement.

🥇 Mark & Eric picked up right where they left off, taking the win with a strong 19.04 lb bag, anchored by a tournament-best 6.12 lb largemouth. Not a bad way to start the year.

🥈 Dan & Joey didn’t miss a beat either, putting together 18.49 lbs and showing they’re still going to be a problem all season long.

🥉 Wayne & Rich rounded out the top three with 13.97 lbs, including a quality 4+ lb smallmouth to keep things interesting.

🏆 Lunker of the Day – Mark & Eric, 6.12 lb largemouth. Early season, big bite, message sent.

Full Results:

9️⃣ Dan & Ryan – 6.98 lbs

🎣 2025 HVBA Season Recap & Final Standings 🎣

Another season is officially in the books! From wild winds on the Hudson to calm days on Candlewood, this year gave us just about every condition imaginable — and the anglers who could adapt rose to the top.

The season featured consistent performers, some breakout wins, and a three-way tie in the points that came down to total weight to settle the order. It doesn’t get much closer than that.

🥇 1st Place – Dan & Joey (354 pts / 142.56 lbs)
An absolutely dominant year. Dan & Joey took multiple wins, several top-three finishes, and the heaviest total weight by far. Whether it was largemouth or smallmouth, tough weather or calm days, they always seemed to figure it out. The 2025 season belonged to them start to finish — your HVBA Anglers of the Year.

🥈 2nd Place – Paul & Perry (324 pts / 104.52 lbs)
Reliable. Steady. Always in contention. Paul & Perry were the model of consistency this year, finishing strong across nearly every body of water and holding second place through the final event. They made it look easy, even when it wasn’t.

🥉 3rd Place – Mark & Eric (322 pts / 103.9 lbs)
Just behind them, Mark & Eric finished the season one bite away from the runner-up spot. Their late-season surge, including two wins on the Mohawk, made them one of the most dangerous teams on the water by year’s end.

🏁 The Three-Way Tie – 4th, 5th, and 6th
Mike & Dale, Mark & Kerry, and John & Zach all ended the year with 306 points, separated only by total weight — talk about a tight finish. Mike & Dale edged out the group with 88.63 lbs for 4th, while Mark & Kerry’s 78.52 lbs and John & Zach’s 76.25 lbs followed close behind. That kind of parity says a lot about the level of competition this season.

The Rest of the Field:
7️⃣ Wayne & Rich – 280 pts / 61.34 lbs
8️⃣ Matt & Steve – 277 pts / 74.11 lbs
9️⃣ Vinny – 153 pts / 19.57 lbs
🔟 Pat & – 105 pts / 16.93 lbs
1️⃣1️⃣ Rick & Jack – 93 pts / 16.61 lbs
1️⃣2️⃣ Dan & Ryan – 77 pts / 13.5 lbs
1️⃣3️⃣ Frank & Nick – 69 pts / 11.78 lbs

📊 Final Thoughts:
This season had it all — brutal Hudson tides, stingy turnovers, surprise wins, and a level of competition that stayed tight all the way through the final weigh-in. Every team that launched this year earned their spot.

Big thanks to everyone who made 2025 another awesome HVBA season — from the anglers to the weigh-in team and everyone behind the scenes.

We’ll see you all in 2026… same passion, same banter, same boats (mostly). 🎣🐟

Is it May yet?!

🐟 Hudson River Finale – Germantown | October 18, 2025 Recap 🐟
The 2025 HVBA season wrapped up back at the Hudson River. And for once, the fall weather cooperated. Blue skies, crisp air, and calm water made for a picture-perfect day on the river… even if the fish still made everyone work for it. A few teams ended the season with a bang.

🥇 Dan & Joey finished their incredible season in style, weighing in 22.72 lbs of pure largemouth to seal the deal and take home the win. Their 5.17 lb hammer also claimed Lunker of the Day, because of course it did.

🥈 Mark & Kerry weren’t far behind with 18.51 lbs, mixing three largemouth with two solid smallmouth. A strong finish to a consistently strong year.

🥉 Mike & Dale put together a quality 14.88 lb bag to secure third, keeping their name in the top tier where it’s been all season long.

🏆 Lunker of the Day – Dan & Joey, 5.17 lb largemouth. Because apparently they just don’t do small fish.

Full Results:

4️⃣ Mark & Eric – 13.33 lbs
5️⃣ Paul & Perry – 12.66 lbs
6️⃣ John & Zach – 2.07 lbs

📊 And just like that, another HVBA season is in the books. From windy Hudson mornings to calm Candlewood afternoons, this year had a little bit of everything — except easy fishing.

👏 Congratulations to all the anglers who stuck it out, battled the elements, and brought fish to the scales all season long. You earned it.

That’s a wrap on 2025, HVBA. 🎣🐟

🐟 Candlewood Turnover Trouble – Squantz Cove | October 4, 2025 Recap 🐟
Candlewood decided to show its fall colors...and its attitude. The lake had turned over, the bait scattered, and the bite was tough from the start. Clear skies and calm water made for a beautiful day on the lake, but those perfect conditions didn’t do much for the fishing. A few teams figured it out; the rest got a crash course in humility.

🥇 Dan & Joey once again proved why they’re the team to beat, hauling in a monster 19.35 lb bag. Their 6.09 lb largemouth crushed the Lunker of the Day and carried them to another commanding win.

🥈 Mark & Eric continued their hot streak with a steady 12.73 lbs, keeping their season momentum strong.

🥉 Matt & Steve locked in third with 12.21 lbs, relying on consistency and patience to edge out the rest of the pack.

🏆 Lunker of the Day – Dan & Joey, 6.09 lb largemouth. The kind of fish that makes everyone else stare quietly at the weigh-in.

Full Results:

4️⃣ Frank & Nick – 7.39 lbs
5️⃣ Mark & Kerry – 5.09 lbs
6️⃣ Mike & Dale – 4.26 lbs

🐟 Mohawk River – Crescent Recap | September 13, 2025 🐟

Back to Crescent for stop #8, and while the day was beautiful, the fishing was anything but. A couple teams found good bags, but most of the field ran into the same problem—bites were hard to come by, and limits were rare.

🥇 Mark & Eric led the way with a strong 17.51 lb bag, anchored by a 4.76 lb largemouth that set the tone. Clean day, clean win.

🥈 Dan & Joey kept their names at the top of the standings with 16.09 lbs, all largemouth, staying steady in the Angler of the Year race.

🥉 John & Zach battled through and managed 7.59 lbs on three fish, enough to lock in third place on a day when every bite mattered.

🏆 Lunker of the Day goes to Mark & Eric for their 4.76 lb largemouth—an easy bright spot on an otherwise stingy day.

Full Results:

4️⃣ Wayne & Rich – 5.84 lbs
5️⃣ Mike & Dale – 3.02 lbs
6️⃣ Mark & Kerry – 2.05 lbs
7️⃣ Matt & Chris – 0.90 lbs

To those fishless bags that stuck it out, +5 pts for Gryffindor. We all have those days, but your presence is noted, appreciated, and we couldn't do this without boats on the water!

📊 With just a few tournaments left, the leaderboard is coming into focus. Every ounce from here on out is going to matter.

📅 Next Stop: Candlewood Lake – October 4th
The season heads back to Candlewood for the fall bite. Cooler temps, changing patterns, and another chance to shake up the standings.

🐟 Hudson River Grind – Germantown | August 23, 2025 Recap 🐟
Another stop on the Hudson, another tough day at the office. The tide never seemed right, the wind never really let up, and the bite was stingy across the board. Limits were hard-earned, ounces made the difference, and every fish counted.

🥇 Paul & Perry rose to the top with a full 5-fish smallmouth limit totaling 10.92 lbs. They stayed patient, leaned on consistency, and walked away with the win.

🥈 Mark & Eric were right behind them with 10.39 lbs, also on a 5-fish smallmouth limit. Just a couple ounces shy of first—proof that on the Hudson, small margins are everything.

🥉 Mark & Kerry locked in third with 8.32 lbs, finding just enough quality to edge out the rest of the pack.

🏆 Lunker of the Day goes to Wayne & Rich with a 3.09 lb smallmouth. On a tough day, that fish stood tall.

Full Results:

4️⃣ Wayne & Rich – 8.21 lbs
5️⃣ John & Zach (Pat filled in) – 7.26 lbs
6️⃣ Matt & Chris – 7.14 lbs
7️⃣ Pat – 4.16 lbs
8️⃣ Mike & Dale – 3.68 lbs
9️⃣ Dan & Joey – 3.20 lbs
🔟 Rick & Jack – 2.27 lbs
1️⃣1️⃣ Steve & Vinny – 2.18 lbs

📊 Season standings are still wide open, and with only a couple events left, every ounce matters.

🐟 Champlain South Bay Showdown – August 9, 2025 Recap 🐟
Stop #6 took us back to big water, and South Bay greeted us with beautiful weather and…some seriously murky water. The bite wasn’t on fire, but when you found them, they were solid fish. Some teams made the right moves and posted weights that could prove pivotal in the season standings.

🥇 Dan & Joey returned to the top with a 19.15 lb all largemouth limit, anchored by a 3.99 lb fish. Calm, steady, and deadly consistent; they’re making a serious push for Angler of the Year.

🥈 John & Zach were right on their heels with 16.71 lbs, all largemouth. A solid showing; Team Tin Can is here to fish.

🥉 Paul & Perry kept their hot streak alive with 16.41 lbs and the Lunker of the Day, a 4.48 lb largemouth that made its presence felt on the scales.

🏆 Lunker of the Day – Paul & Perry – 4.48 lb largemouth.

Full Results:

4️⃣ Matt & Chris – 14.87 lbs
5️⃣ Mike & Dale – 14.03 lbs
6️⃣ Mark & Eric – 13.94 lbs
7️⃣ Mark & Kerry – 12.62 lbs
8️⃣ Wayne & Rich – 9.24 lbs
9️⃣ Pat & – 6.30 lbs
🔟 Steve & Vinny – 4.79 lbs
1️⃣1️⃣ Frank & Nick – 4.39 lbs

📊 The points race is heating up, and every ounce counts heading into the final stretch.
