Happy Birthday to the most iconic flag in the world. (Okay, we might be a little biased, but can you blame us?) 🤠
On this day in 1839, the Congress of the Republic of Texas officially adopted the Lone Star Flag. For 187 years, these colors have stood for the independence, grit, and pride that define Texas.
Quick refresher on what the colors represent:
Blue: Loyalty 🔵
White: Purity ⚪
Red: Bravery 🔴
The idea of the single red stripe and single white stripe actually goes back before Texas independence. It traces to the short-lived Republic of Fredonia near modern-day Nacogdoches. Formed in 1826 through an alliance between local Anglo settlers and several Native American tribes, the Fredonian flag used red and white stripes to symbolize unity. Though the rebellion failed, its ideas helped inspire the later Texas Revolution.
The “lone star” itself is even older. It was already a symbol of unity and independence among Texans before appearing on the flag. A similar star flew on the Burnet Flag, which was inspired by the flag of the short-lived Republic of West Florida.
