Everyone crowds into Springdale.
Often booked out months ahead, peak rates for a basic hotel room and a shuttle line down the block before you’ve even had coffee.
There’s another way in.
We are on the Apple Valley side, about 30 minutes from the park and the drive over is via the Smithsonian Butte National Byway - Red Rock the entire way, Zion opening up in front of you and most mornings you’ll have the road to yourself. It’s graded dirt and it’s one of the prettiest half hours in southern Utah.
One tip: Google maps will send you around through Hurricane and LaVerkin instead. That’s 45 to 50 minutes and none of the view.
Take the by-way.
Out here, you get a whole tiny home instead of a room. Some have rooftop decks and private hot tubs. All of them have Red Rock at the door and a sky full of stars.
