There’s the presidential story, of course, but there is also the hometown story: the place Harry and Bess called home and the everyday life surrounding a public figure.

Visit the Truman Library and you can spend time with that larger history. Explore the Truman Home when tours are available and another side of the story comes into view. They are different experiences, each worth planning for rather than treating as a quick stop on the way somewhere else.

A history trip is better when you have time to follow your curiosity.

Start with a Tuesday arrival at Woodstock Inn, dinner, and a little time to get acquainted with Independence. On Wednesday, explore the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library & Museum and consider a Truman Home tour. The library tells the presidential story; the home brings you closer to Harry and Bess’s everyday life.

Truman Home tours currently run Wednesday through Sunday. Free, same-day tickets are issued at the National Park Service visitor center, first come, first served.
