August is for things like this.

Water balloons in the yard.
Bare feet in the grass.
Kids running in every direction.
Someone getting soaked.
Everyone laughing.

No plans.
No schedule.
No need to go anywhere.

Just one of those afternoons where the kids are having so much fun that nobody notices what time it is.

Summer won't always look like this.

Nothing much happened today.

We sat around the fire.

Someone threw another log on.

The kids played until it got dark.

There was laughter, a little storytelling, and a whole lot of watching the flames.

Nobody checked the time.

Nobody needed to be anywhere.

And that's the funny thing about camp.

The days when nothing much happens often become the stories you tell years later.

"Remember that night at camp?"

August is for noticing.

The last few weeks of summer.

Dinner at camp isn't really about what's on the grill.

It's about everyone gathering before the charcoal is even ready.

Someone's flipping burgers.
Someone's buttering corn.
The kids are running barefoot through the grass while the grown-ups argue over who's in charge of the tongs.

By the time the food is finished, nobody remembers who cooked what.

They remember eating together.

The smell of charcoal.
The sound of laughter drifting through the pines.
Watching the sky turn orange while another summer day quietly comes to an end.

Funny how the simplest meals are often the ones that stay with us the longest.

Some days don't need an agenda.

Just two golden retrievers, calm water, and the Adirondack mountains standing quietly in the background.

Chase and Chloe have made this swim more times than anyone could count. They don't know it's August. They don't know summer is winding down.

They just know this is where they're happiest.

Watching them splash through the still water is a good reminder that some of the best days are the simplest ones. No schedule. No rush. Just fresh mountain air, clear water, and another afternoon that somehow turns into a memory.

Around here, August isn't about squeezing in one last trip.

Chimney Mountain has always been worth it.

The climb, the views, the feeling at the top when you realize there’s nowhere else you’d rather be.

That’s part of camp too. Getting outside, pushing a little, and ending up somewhere you’ll remember long after the hike back down.
