8:30pm IRMA UPDATE: Thankfully, we can share some really good news with you. We are still dealing with a very strong and dangerous storm but not at the level national forecasters previously thought.
Irma has been downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane. Hurricane Irma’s eye is located over Fort Myers, with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph, moving north at 14 miles per hour. By the time it gets to Citrus, it could possibly be a CAT 1. Very good news for our area.
We can expect police, fire and medical operations to cease within the next two hours because of winds hitting 45 mph. Emergency Management is monitoring the wind speed carefully and will advise shortly.
Sustained tropical storm force winds will begin sometime between 21:00-23:00 hours tonight. Hurricane force winds can be expected to start around midnight tonight. Hurricane force winds should cease somewhere around 06:00 hours Monday, with tropical storm force winds ceasing around 12:00 hours Monday. These times are only estimates and are subject to change.
Please be advised that when the eye passes over, it DOES NOT mean the storm is over. That lull will be followed by the hurricane winds again. DO NOT assume the storm is over.
Dangerous storm surge is expected on the west coast with water levels about 4-5 feet above ground level.
There is also a flood warning for areas along the Withlacoochee River over the next few days. There will be record level highs.
We appreciate everyone's patience as this storm has fluctuated drastically over the past few days. We are not out of the woods yet. PLEASE stay tuned to your local weather channels if you have not lost power and stay indoors.
We will have some damage and cleanup is ahead of us. But we will all get through this together!
We will continue to bring you updates here from the our Emergency Operations Center in Lecanto. Stay safe.
