Little Bitty Lodge

It’s alright to be little bitty. Isn’t that what Alan Jackson said? Here at SUGAR PINE LODGE, we certainly think it’s alright to be little bitty. Since 2007 we’ve grown some but not so much that we’ve lost any of our country charm. In Iowa Hill, a tiny little town that some call a living ghost town, we’ve pretty much got “little” down to a science. We have a little store, a little lodge, a little lake....and a huge reputation for great fun, warm hospitality, and some of the most beautiful mountain scenery on God’s green earth. Winter or summer, rain or shine, there’s always something fun going on in Iowa Hill. As for the lodge, we may have started out small but we have a big dream and you know what they say about that -- if you’re going to dream, dream in technicolor.

In 2007, Woody and Brynn Wooden came to tiny Iowa Hill from Nashville, Tennessee. They bought the old Goodall cabin on Big Dipper Road and slowly began to turn it into a gathering place for friends and family. One thing led to another and today the tiny cabin is a two-storey lodge that’s popular among hikers, bikers, rafters, horse-back riders, four-wheelers, and even snow-shoers. Brynn, or Miss B as most people call her, has brought to the lodge her unique version of southern comfort food and Woody, a wise-cracking good ol’ boy from Tennessee, has brought live music and a lot of pickin’ and grinnin’ to this “off the beaten path” inn.

Miss B brings a wealth of experience as the owner of two popular restaurants in Tennessee and is the former owner of the Iowa Hill General Store. Woody’s musical experience spans five decades and includes on-stage performances with Del Reeves, George Jones and Wanda Jackson. The lodge may be little, maybe even the best kept secret in the Sierras, but it certainly shines when it comes to good ol’ down-home hospitality and how could it not with these two in charge?

At present, SUGAR PINE LODGE has six unimproved campsites, two guest rooms, and two rustic cabins. It serves as overflow camping for the Forest Service campgrounds which are closer to the lake. Located just two and half miles from the boat dock at Sugar Pine Lake, the lodge is as close to the lake as you can get on privately owned land. It’s actually part of an old mining claim. Surrounded by the Tahoe National Forest and being “off the grid” means that SUGAR PINE LODGE is truly rustic, the real deal as they say in the old west, and a fun and interesting place for the whole family.
