Background of Snowshoe Country Lodge

The program, which is a fixed-location resort/camp, began in 1972 with Ron guiding winter camping trips and summer canoe and backpacking adventures around Minnesota, Wisconsin and Northwest Ontario for one of the Y’s in St. Paul - later on his own. The first log-built base camp he constructed was east of Hinckley on the Grindstone River, and later, a much larger one near the southern border of the BWCA southeast of Ely on Sand Lake. Beginning in 1975, Ron taught the craft of log building to several thousand owner-builder students until 2018, when he began consulting work while continuing to operate the resort with his sidekicks, Chester Brown and Cougar.
