Let's talk about ticks! 😲

We've all seen them. We've all heard it: "ticks are really bad this year!" At Canter's Cave, we do our best to help prevent tick bites as much as possible. As your child heads off to summer camp, we encourage you to take a few simple steps to help prevent tick bites.

👕Apply insect repellent to clothing before camp. Families can treat their camper's clothing ahead of camp with permethrin, which can help prevent ticks and mosquitos for weeks! Treating clothing ahead of time is one of the best ways to prevent tick bites. You can dress campers in light‑colored clothing with long sleeves and socks when possible.

🧍‍♂️Teach your camper how to do a full tick check each evening - especially behind the ears, along the hairline, groin, armpits, and around the waistband. Ticks like to hide in warm, moist areas of the body. If they find a tick attached to their body, instruct them to see the camp nurse.

🎒Pack plenty of insect repellent and teach your camper when to use it! Our staff and counselors will have plenty on hand, but it's important for campers to also have their own!

Camp staff will also be sharing prevention reminders so everyone can enjoy a healthy, happy camp experience! Check out this YouTube video from Ohio State University Extension with tips to stay tick safe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKOl-v1j_VM

We had so much fun at our Spring Open Hike Night! As always, thanks to the Jackson City Library for their partnership in hosting these events. We hiked to Echo Cave and learned a lot about the natural history of the area and how the trees and plants in the area responded to the wildfire we experienced in 2024. We also learned about the new Bee Tree Trails, a pollinator education initiative we launched for when we host hikes at camp. Check it out at https://jackson.osu.edu/program-areas/agriculture-and-natural-resources/pollinator-trails. It was a very fun, educational hike! Canter’s Cave 4-H Camp is private property, so we aren’t open to public hikers very often. Stay tuned for a fall open hike for more public hiking opportunities! 🥾🏕️🌲🪵

For now, if you’re interested in hiking some more trails here at Canter’s Cave, we recommend you visit our upcoming Camp Open House on Sunday, May 3rd from 12-4 PM. We’ll be hiking, fishing, and more! Don’t miss it! 🏕️
