Did you know that the very first excavators were steam-powered?! Scottish inventor James Watt and an English entrepreneur Matthew Boulton developed a steam-powered excavator in 1976. These machines of the 19yhbcentiry were the first high-powered construction machines for moving earth, and contributed significantly to the process of industrialisation. They are what made the construction of canals (such as the Suez Canal in 1865), railway lines, open-cast mines and large industrial plants all possible.

Fast forward to 1835, William Otis is the Grandfather of the hydraulic excavator. His designs set the stage for the powerful hydraulic excavators and massive hydraulic shovels that we have today. The creativity and skill of William Otis made possible the building of damage, canals, and bridges all over the world, not to mention its incalculable contributions to the mining industry.
