Hello Jacob Lake Friends and Family!
People have been asking for an update on us and the Rock Canyon Fire that is slow burning about 15-ish miles north of Jacob Lake Inn.
First off, we are always incredibly grateful for the men and women who are fighting these fires in hot and dangerous conditions. We are grateful for their hard work and dedication.
Secondly, we are safe and the fire is heading a completely different direction from us. (See maps atrached). But also, there is no smoke headed our direction and all the main roads are open to travel through Northern Arizona, Utah, and of course, the North Rim (see closure maps for forest road closures, etc).
This fire is wind driven, like those last year. You can see this from the maps included. With the work of dozer lines, existing roads, helicopters and other measures they have been able to continue to contain further eastward growth. Much of what is burning now is smoldering interior patches that are filling in areas that didnt burn in the initial quick push from the fire front and wind.
Of course, when this fire started east of Fredonia several days ago with a fast moving flames and a big, billowing plume of smoke, our family manament team looked at each other and thought, "well, here we go again." We prayed, and then we talked to our employees about the reality of fires starting during fire season, especially after barely any precipitation this winter and temperatures climbing. We talked about how we evacuate, what that process looks like, the timing, etc. And then we talked about this fire.
With as challenging and heartbreaking as last year's fires were, it sounds a little funny to say we are grateful for them, but we are. Not only because of the preparation it gives us for future fires, but also because for the Rock Canyon Fire to even reach us, it would have to travel through the depth of last year's White Sage Fire scar. So thank you to the fire scar for keeping us safe.
We know that the areas being burnt now have caused evacuations, changed peoples travel and hiking plans, and definitely send more smoke toward Page, AZ, which I know they could live without again. However, we are grateful for the swiftness of the action taken by BLM and Forest Service teams, for the Level Three team that is currently in command, and for the resources being used to keep all those affected safe.
So with all this being said, we are open. We are safe. The North Rim is as beautiful as ever with such lovely temperatures. So come beat the heat of other areas and join us in the cool Kaibab National Forest, trek off to the canyon for spectacular views where you may share the viewpoint with only a handful of visitors. We have rooms available, great food, and of course, delicious cookies to take on your adventures.
As we continue to recover from the economic challenges from last years fires, we are grateful for each visitor and new friend. Thank you for your concern, your messages, and your love. We have such a wonderful community and are grateful for you all. See you soon. The North Rim awaits!
