In 1872 Jefferson Texas was the most powerful inland port in the state. Cotton moved through her docks by the millions of pounds. Steamboats lined her bayou. Wealthy merchants built mansions that rivaled anything in New Orleans. And one man built something nobody had ever seen before. Colonel Benjamin Epperson — lawyer, political powerhouse, and personal confidant of Sam Houston — built a three story home on a corner in Jefferson that stopped people in their tracks. He called it the House of the Seasons. Walk inside and look up. In the cupola at the very top of the house Epperson installed stained glass windows in four different colors. As the light moves through them it casts the rooms below in the colors of spring, summer, fall and winter — all four seasons inside a single home. No two hours look the same. No two visits feel the same. Standing in the yard is a magnolia tree so old it predates the house itself — 87 feet tall, its branches once shading college students taking Latin classes on the lawn. The house survived Jefferson’s rise, its fall, and its long quiet resurrection. It is still standing today. Still glowing. Still turning light into seasons. If you’ve never been to Jefferson Texas — this is reason enough to go.
