That was not a ghost haunting the walls of the Excelsior House Hotel last night- it was a feral kitten that decided to enter an outdoor ventilation pipe and became stuck!

We were made aware of the situation early Saturday evening and a team of hotel staff and wonderful community members jumped into action.

A camera was lowered into the pipe to locate the kitten and wet cat food was provided. All attempts to reach down 8” into the pipe only caused the kitten to use the horizontal pipe that goes under the floor of the hotel. A makeshift “ladder” was created and the hopes were that the little guy would use it to climb out once the area was less chaotic.

Unfortunately the kitten did not like that solution and stayed the night. This morning, more advanced efforts were put in place involving digging under the hotel, accessing the pipe and creating a better escape route for this stubborn baby. The area was cleared, a camera was put in place and prayers were said- and this worked!

The kitten used this new hole and it was caught on camera. A homemade cover for this hole was quickly crafted and all pipes will be permanently screened this week to prevent this situation from happening again.

A huge thank you to Mickie Moore, Paula & Tim Rogers, Marianne Jones, Friends of Jefferson Animals, Marion County Constable Jeff Greer, Tyler Jones and City Council member Bubba Haggard for all of the efforts that lead to this joyful ending. (this isn’t Bubba’s first cat rescue!)
