In the morning, enjoy complimentary breakfast and coffee before deciding what comes next. The loveliest plan may be the simplest: an easy walk, time together, and nowhere you need to rush.

Legend says a furious railroad man once picked up a pen in a Jefferson, Texas hotel and cursed an entire town with four words: grass will grow in your streets.
The man was Jay Gould, one of the most powerful railroad barons in America, and in 1882 Jefferson had every reason to believe him. The town was one of the richest river ports in the entire state, with paddle boats from New Orleans docking along its banks nearly every single day. City leaders were so confident in that river trade that they'd already turned down Gould's offer to run his railroad straight through town.
Gould built his line through Marshall instead. Jefferson's steamboat trade collapsed within a decade. The population crashed. Storefronts that had thrived for a generation closed for good, one after another.
One building never did.
The Excelsior House had been standing on that same stretch of riverfront since 1858, built by a steamboat captain named William Perry on land the city gave him when Jefferson was still the beating commercial heart of Northeast Texas. Presidents had already slept there by the time Gould ever signed its register, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford B. Hayes, and later Lyndon B. Johnson, whose own wife had stayed there as a Jefferson schoolgirl decades before she became First Lady. Oscar Wilde checked in on a poetry tour and reportedly spent half his visit explaining his lavender velvet jacket to the other guests.
The Excelsior didn't close when the town around it did. It just kept renting rooms, through the collapse, through the following century, through decades when Jefferson had little left to offer visitors except its own past. In 1961, a group of local women called the Jessie Allen Wise Garden Club took the hotel over and restored it completely. They still run it today as a nonprofit, the original front desk, the walnut secretary, and the ballroom all still standing exactly where they always were.
The grass never did grow in Jefferson's streets. A hundred and forty years after Jay Gould wrote that curse into the register, you can still book a room in the very same hotel and sleep under the same roof as three presidents and a poet in a lavender jacket.
