This is Cicero Rufus Perry. An early Texas Ranger, in August 1844 he was severely wounded in a fight with the Comanches on the Nueces River. He and a man named Christopher Acklin were left for dead by their two companions. With three wounds, Perry walked 120 miles, from near Uvalde to San Antonio, unarmed and without food or water. He was born in 1822 and passed away in 1898.

"Opera House
Theatre Players'
Chocolate Sunday Winners Announced!"

There was a double winner in the Opera House Theatre Players new category,
Marilyn's Tops In Chocolate Cake,
when two entries made by local good cooks brought in their cakes for the competition.

Winning again for his beautifully decorated and delicious Chocolate Truffle Cake was Wes Carter, last year’s First Place overall winner. Sharing the First Place with him was newcomer Mrs. Valerie Ayers, owner of the Azalea Inn Bed and Breakfast who entered her Mounds Chocolate Cake created from chocolate, coconut vanilla pudding, and covered with rich chocolate icing topped with shaved curls of dark chocolate.

The two each received a gift to commemorate the occasion, a large multi-pointed gold star sculpture for Mrs. Ayers and a bottle of wine which was the 2012 winner of the Jefferson Gold Cup for wine went to Wes Carter. Mrs. Ayers also took First Prize in the open competition which covers anything entered that has been made using chocolate. Her entry of Chocolate Fudge beat out the other entries that included Red Velvet Chocolate Balls and Chocolate Balls dipped with Pink Icing; Chocolate Tamales, Chocolate Crust Chocolate Pie; Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate 2 Pound Cake and Chocolate Peanut Clusters.

Taking Second Place was Cherry Fishers Plain Ole Chocolate Pie;
while Robbie Fortune's Chocolate Peanut Clusters won Third Place.

Patrons who came were entertained by the fabulous Wonderettes, a four-girl quartet who sang music of the 1950s and brought the house down with their antics and play with the audience. Sound DJ was Noah Dean.

At the end of the concert, the winners of the competition were announced and the audience invited in to the dining room of
The Hamburger Store where Chocolate Sunday was held to sample all the entries.

Judges for the competition were Elaine and R Mac McFarland.

According to Theatre director, Marcia Thomas,
there was a full house for the event which is held yearly near Valentin’s Day
and expressed thanks to
Sammy and Julie Testa, owners of The Hamburger Store,
for their cooperation which included furnishing coffee and water for those attending.

It's been a long time coming but I finally finished the sign for the inn. For those of you that keep up with such things our old sign was attacked by a falling branch a while back, which initiated Valerie's relentless encouragement for me to make this sign. Please drive by and take a look and let Val know what you think. In case you didn't notice the Azalea's are in full bloom also...another good reason to drive by.

The 33rd Candlelight Tour of Homes® is about to come to an end with another successful year. There have been hundreds of people from all points near and far, that have marveled at the period decorations in the three wonderful homes presented this year, and lets not forget Jefferson's own historic car museum that was presented as a bonus to the Candlelight patrons. It has been a monumental undertaking with many people doing numerous jobs to make all of this happen and I thank all that participated in this endeavor, but there is one lady that deserves a standing ovation and that is Mary Nash, the lady in the photo. If you see her at her home..."Singletons Virginia Cross"...just say thank you. Oh, you might say thanks to Weldon also, he had to put up with Mary during this time.
