"Opera House
Theatre Players'
Chocolate Sunday Winners Announced!"
There was a double winner in the Opera House Theatre Players new category,
Marilyn's Tops In Chocolate Cake,
when two entries made by local good cooks brought in their cakes for the competition.
Winning again for his beautifully decorated and delicious Chocolate Truffle Cake was Wes Carter, last year’s First Place overall winner. Sharing the First Place with him was newcomer Mrs. Valerie Ayers, owner of the Azalea Inn Bed and Breakfast who entered her Mounds Chocolate Cake created from chocolate, coconut vanilla pudding, and covered with rich chocolate icing topped with shaved curls of dark chocolate.
The two each received a gift to commemorate the occasion, a large multi-pointed gold star sculpture for Mrs. Ayers and a bottle of wine which was the 2012 winner of the Jefferson Gold Cup for wine went to Wes Carter. Mrs. Ayers also took First Prize in the open competition which covers anything entered that has been made using chocolate. Her entry of Chocolate Fudge beat out the other entries that included Red Velvet Chocolate Balls and Chocolate Balls dipped with Pink Icing; Chocolate Tamales, Chocolate Crust Chocolate Pie; Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate 2 Pound Cake and Chocolate Peanut Clusters.
Taking Second Place was Cherry Fishers Plain Ole Chocolate Pie;
while Robbie Fortune's Chocolate Peanut Clusters won Third Place.
Patrons who came were entertained by the fabulous Wonderettes, a four-girl quartet who sang music of the 1950s and brought the house down with their antics and play with the audience. Sound DJ was Noah Dean.
At the end of the concert, the winners of the competition were announced and the audience invited in to the dining room of
The Hamburger Store where Chocolate Sunday was held to sample all the entries.
Judges for the competition were Elaine and R Mac McFarland.
According to Theatre director, Marcia Thomas,
there was a full house for the event which is held yearly near Valentin’s Day
and expressed thanks to
Sammy and Julie Testa, owners of The Hamburger Store,
for their cooperation which included furnishing coffee and water for those attending.
