Water quality is on many Iowan's minds. I realize beaver damage trees and can back up water into farm fields leading locals to trap and destroy the beaver dams. Over the years I have photographed and watched beaver and feel the benefits and their impact on cleaning our water should be looked at.
We had a confinement spill into a creek that flows to the Raccoon River. The beaver had built a 2 dam system. The first pool collected the sludge and the second seemed to filter out the "fine" stuff and dirt. Leaving the water so you could watch muskrats and turtles on the bottom of the 4 ft deep pool of the second. These pools proved important when we were in drought a few years back.
We can take two things from this.
Save money, work with the farmers and let beavers to do their work and not be killed for it.
And/Or seed buffers around field tile intakes and build double dams or dam/wetland systems on many of our creeks. The clean water would not only benefit us, but wildlife, too.

Water lines, Xenia water and Electric lines are going in at Squirrel Hollow. A shower/restrooms are part of the long term planning when funding is available.

We realize this is short notice, but...

The Friends of Greene County Iowa Parks invite you to a maidrite lunch tomorrow, May 13, 11:45 am at the Milwaukee Depot. This is our annual meeting, with just a casual lunch with conversation and introductions. No agenda or business meeting. The Friends will have a business meeting following the lunch.

Country living, winter you step out the door to total silence. No cars, trains or people screaming. Wildlife are just trying to survive. Like an alarm clock you first hear the Blue Birds, Killdeer and then Robins as the spring migration begins. By May 1st, nature's alarm clocks have you up by 5:30. As the rush begins.

Went back today after the burn. All is well. Found the male Crain.

I have been looking for Sandhill Crains. The controlled burn in the area where they tend to nest at Snake Creek spooked the big birds
