Sea turtles have a unique anatomy adapted for life in the ocean. Their body plan has changed little over the past 100 million years, suggesting it is well-suited for marine environments. The most distinctive feature is their shell, which is divided into the carapace (upper shell) and the plastron (lower shell). The shell is made of bone and cartilage and is covered with scutes, which are keratinized plates. Sea turtles have flippers instead of legs and feet, with the front flippers being long and powerful for swimming, while the rear flippers are shorter and used for steering and digging nests in the sand. Their streamlined shell shape reduces drag and enables efficient swimming, reaching speeds of up to 35 km/h (22 mph) in some species.

Cool cottage

✨ 𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙷𝚒𝚜𝚝𝚘𝚛𝚢 𝚘𝚏 𝙲𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚘𝚔𝚎𝚎 𝙲𝚘𝚝𝚝𝚊𝚐𝚎 ✨

Built in 1904 as a Christmas gift for Dr. George and Hester Shrady by their son-in-law, Edwin Gould, this charming home was originally known as 𝗦𝗵𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲. 🏠

In the 1950s, there were plans to make it the 'Little Executive Mansion' for Governor Marvin Griffin, but those plans were scrapped due to controversy over the renovations. 🛠️

Before 1950, Georgia’s 100 miles of coastline were either privately owned or for white people only, meaning African Americans faced arrest if they set foot on the beaches. However, after a petition by Black residents in Glynn County, St. Andrews Beach on the southern end of Jekyll Island became the only spot on Georgia’s coast where African Americans could legally enjoy the beach. From 1950 to 1964, it served as a retreat for local Black families and tourists from across the South until integration in 1964. 🏖️
