TALK ABOUT A HUM-DINGER, OR TWO!

This week saw Fiona Pappillon up to some nonsense having captured this 8” lizard, species unknown, but a homerun on the color spectrum. It wasn’t injured albeit feigning death when Joshua discovered the near-crime scene. Luckily, Fi gave in quickly and the not-so-little guy survived. Check out his turquoise cravat and vest – pretty snazzy and uptown, right?

Regrettably, we don’t see nearly as many hummingbirds as in years past so when Joshua stumbled onto a little lady building her nest in the pear tree near the outdoor shower, we reacted like grandparents-to-be. We showed you the nest 2 weeks ago and now lo-and-behold, our little gal gave us 2 eggs and the hatching of 2 of the tiniest creatures you can imagine.

The interior diameter of her nest is barely 1 & 1/4” and now holds 2 babes that look like miniature dinosaurs. Their little heads are just a tad larger than a matchstick head but smaller than a Q-Tip, and they sport a modicum of feather spuds. We won’t be sneaking peeks for a while until they get stronger so as not to upset mom and dad but rest assured we will be vigilant from a distance. By the way, were y’all aware that from DAYBREAK THROUGH SUNDOWN, mom and dad share feeding duties of their brood every 15 minutes! It won’t be long before these babes will quadruple in size and be ready to fledge.

On an equally exquisite yet humbling note, our zinnias are beginning to make what we intend will be an eye-popping show this year and we aren’t the only ones taking notice. Again, not unlike our ignorance of the lizard variety, we don’t know who this resplendent butterfly creature is, but there is no question about how they are in a mutual admiration pact with the zinnias.

MAKING DUST WHILE THE SUN SHINES . . . ?

Oh brother, is this a testimony to my phrase “If you are going to make a mess, make a good one!” Well, we surely succeeded. We have taken this opportunity to remove and refinish the gouges in the dining room floor created by ill-fitting chair and table leg booties with a little help from stilettos. The first step was to clear the room before sanding. Furniture ended up in the side yard and everywhere EXCEPT the dining room. As an aside, seeing my home like this makes me nearly apoplectic I tell you.

The final chores included refinishing of the thresholds between the kitchen and backdoor and then the refinishing and FILLING the threshold of the dining room patio doors.

Significant weather damage on the outside threshold required filling with wood putty and apoxy.

We failed to anticipate the magnitude of dust so we did not tape off the room resulting in a massive ceiling-to-floor dusting project including every individual piece of whatever objects & furniture in all of the main floor – whew!

A final coat of the same professional sealer that Paul used when we redid all the floors and we were back in business. We actually applied three costs with heavy product concentration in the areas most distressed by sanding out the gouges. Strangely enough, this product has a nearly elastic feel when dried and thoroughly cured which requires 3 days. Every time we do this I proclaim that ‘. . . this is my last time . . .’ but fully realizing that this old gal needs her gams looking just right!

ROLLING INTO JUNE!

As difficult as it is to believe, here we find ourselves rolling right into the halfway mark of this year – can that even be possible? This month is revealing all varieties of Mother Nature’s splendors and wonders. Aren’t these little guys just soooooo stinking cute for about ONE MINUTE?

Speaking of ‘stinking’ cute, this appears to be another youngster perhaps progeny of the stinker that seems to have set up housekeeping under the honey shack.

Not to be outdone, our honeybees are busy with the zinnias and the nasturtiums that are overflowing the Chauffeur’s Quarters raised beds and tumbling down the garage roof.

Our spiders are helping the ponds by creating their lairs above the ponds to capture their ‘larder’ thereby cutting down on stuff falling into the ponds. Each one of those dots on the web is a tiny insect they have caught. Amazing, no?

And finally, the crème de le crème for the first time this season, a youngster buck (notice the beginnings of this horn nubbins) wetting his whistle just moments before Joshua showed up this morning. We are hoping he returns and brings his friends. All-in-all, our hats are off to what June is bringing to the table!

‘MAY’ WE CHECK IN WITH?

May on the mountain is simply exquisite – perhaps the month of May at its zenith! – so we want to give you a fun glimpse of what’s waiting for you, starting with our first spotting of a new hummingbird nest in one of our pear trees. Joshua spied a female youngster zooming about when he found the nest so we are hoping this is her first marvelous attempt at setting up housekeeping and it will soon be populated with two eggs and then . . . magic.

Dichondra starting in the south garden patio and fauna fun at the local feeding station and watering hole.

The Surgeon's House: A Place of Healing

On a very personal note: My home has served as a place of healing since
its construction. The chief surgeons healed uncounted citizens, and many have found a healing sanctuary here since. Many years ago our famous and beloved tamale ladies cooked 350 tamales in my kitchen, more than once I believe. A few years ago, my kitchen catered Katie Lee and Joey Van Luewen’s memorial dinner for 100 folks at Spook Hall. Many events and wedding receptions have been served from here.

So, supporting the food bank in our wild ride of prepping, cooking, bagging, labeling, freezing and returning to the food bank what we collect every week – BLESS THE VOLUNTEERS AND THE CHURCH FOR KEEPING IT OPEN – is nothing more than fulfilling our small part in the legacy of kitchen service that this home holds. The beautiful folks who man the food bank (Liz, Ann, Pastor Vicki and so many more) and those who are saving and donating containers are the real HEROES. We ((Joshua, Khristyanna, Tara, Kirt, and myself) are simply the lucky behind-the-scenes folks who get to do it, and we’re thankful for the opportunity to contribute!

Thank you all for participating and come visit us soon. . . Andrea and Crew at the Surgeon’s House

ABSOLUTELY NOT TO BE OUTDONE . . . 🌺🌸🌼🌷🪻

Considering all the critter action in the gardens recently, guess who is putting their resplendent feet forward? The fleured folks won’t be upstaged so they are showing us their finest as well. With the PREmonsoons, things actually appear to just ‘pop’ overnight

PASSION & MORE POPPING AT TSH!💐😀🦨

Mother Nature always wins out on Her terms and never more evident than with our hit-and-miss success or lack thereof with our passionflower vines and our attempts to transplant wild penstemon. This season in the mural patio the passionflower blossoms RULE.

Even if we fail at transplanting the various wild varieties of penstemon and thistles, we found resplendent croppings along the UVX Road so we graced our table.

We adore it when we share gardens with guests so that a little of us is with them and vice versa. Phillip and Andrew of wood working fame and commonly known to us as ‘the gents’ gifted us iris bulbs from their Phoenix gardens and the first one showed up in the Chauffeur’s Quarters window boxes – absolutely glorious and thanks to P&A.

While we appreciate all opportunities to share with the Earth Mother, some are perhaps a little more appreciated than others. Recently, we ‘enjoyed?’ the presence of senor LePew setting up housekeeping under the honey shack and a darling feathered person that we can’t identify. I guess we take them one-and-all, right?

WE BEE SAFELY HAPPENING — YAY! 😀😀🐝🐝

Our two new bee baby colonies under the auspicious leaderships of Queen Stella and Queen Vanessa appear to be busy foraging, building stores and coming and going to beat the band with bulky pollen panties. A great portend for their healthy survival, for a great honey production, and hopefully ‘robbery’ of some exquisite honey later this year – fingers crossed.

Given my past proclivity for being Miss Tumblelina falling down, Joshua leapt into service for me so their queen beekeeper could safely tend and communicate with our ladies and their entourage of drones. Take a look at what he constructed and how divinely I can safely traverse. One hundred shouts of GRATITUDE to the universe for safe passage to my sweethearts . . .

We even have a comfy observation post from which we can observe and commune with both colonies – yay!

We were feeling so full of ourselves that the Capt. (always acting foolish) did a little regular policing of our born-again faux mosaic and Joshua had a rather stern word with the grand old gramma who was working some roof shenanigans on the Master Suite balcony . . . NO-NO gramma! She had actually yanked her arbor and a portion of the wood topper under the roof tiles 1 & 1/2 feet away FROM THE ROOF!

Again, for everyone’s safety, we hosed down the balcony before AND AFTER welding.

A STEP IN STEWARDSHIP

Over the years you have heard me say (repeat) many things like,

“My home chose me.”

“I intend that my home continues magically along LONG after I’m gone.”

“No one will ever sell this home. The next right person will see her and be as enamored as I was.”

“I take the stewardship of my home, property, guests, and business very much to heart!”

Over the last 34 years my property was up for sale only once when I had my Coconut Island vision but she didn’t sell, I got tired of waiting for ‘my man’ and the sale so I brought my Coconut Island to ME. After I made that mental and emotional perspective shift, I was so ecstatically happy, I took her off the market. Three years ago (FINALLY) my man, the Captain, arrived here on my Coconut Island.

Over the years, rumors have cropped up claiming she was for sale and some were pretty hysterical, completely out-of-the-blue.

Not so, now, as I am taking the next step in my stewardship . . . the same stewardship that has allowed my home and me to take mutual loving watch care of each other for all this time. We are looking forward to passing the baton to the next most divinely-guided visionary, who, when I am gone, will take this grand old gal into her next glorious era. It is time to lay that foundation for that bridge. A neighbor recently and most eloquently equated it to grafting a new exotic limb to an incredible, amazing, thriving creation, thereby adding to the beauty of the new amalgam. An apt likeness I believe.

We will be staying here and things shall remain as always. Serene – peaceful – tranquil – whimsical – and most importantly, waiting to see your beautiful selves and enjoy opportunities to serve you many more times. So, if you see or hear of the listing please rejoice and support us in this next evolution! All is better than WELL! Come see us again soon knowing that you are missed and held tenderly in our hearts always and forever, your favorite innkeeper, andrea at the surgeon’s house xoxoox

RIGHT IS RIGHT AND WRONG IS WRONG

A few months ago, we received a cold call from a woman inquiring about the Ukrainian flag that has been flying from our front porch since the wretched mess in the Ukraine began going on 4years ago. I explained that while I am Hungarian rather than Ukrainian I felt a Slavic kinship and more importantly, I believe that Right is Right and Wrong is Wrong. The person introduced herself as Irene Renstrom, vice president of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA), Branch #3 in Phoenix.

The UNWLA was celebrating 100 years of dedication, cultural preservation, and service to the Ukrainian-American community and in recent years to support the current battles that ravage the Ukrainians now. Their Centennial Gala was holding a fund-raising event in January and Irene asked if, given our feelings and shared interest in the goals of the UNWLA, might we consider making a donation. We jumped at the opportunity and felt honoured to have donated a 2-night stay in support of their worthy endeavors. Then we waited as many donated stays are never redeemed for whatever reason.

In March, our wait was rewarded when we heard from Gerry Kovar, winner of the stay in the silent auction. Miss Gerry is Irish but her husband, Tony, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to refugees fleeing the Ukraine. Like so many other refugee families, much history and many family members and ties are assigned to the past so Tony will be the last of the Kovar clan. Tony visited the Ukraine in 1992 and again in 2004 but is intent on taking one more sojourn since Gerry has never been. Clearly that trip will need to await a calmed government climate.

Strangely enough, I am the last of the Prince family line that immigrated from Germany and Hungary with my grandpa Prince. He and his wife had a family of 8 children – 4 boys and 4 girls – my dad, Andy, being the 5th. Right after the birth of their last child, my grandmother Gloria (nee Schwartzkoff) Prince died leaving Grandpa to raise the children with the help of the two oldest kids, Aunt Mary and Uncle George. Obviously, I never knew my grandmother Prince but remember my grandpa Prince vividly. Tony knows a handful of similar stories from the Kovar lineage, stories that were unfortunately quite common in those times.

Gerry and Tony stayed with us for two nights and were gracious enough to allow a quick photo shoot with the Ukraine flag waving proudly alongside the French flag. Gerry and Tony remain key activists and supporters of the UNWLA Branch #3 in Phoenix, as do Irene and her husband who have travelled various times to do hospital and humanitarian duty in their beloved country. We gratefully appreciate the opportunity given to us by these folks and this organization. Thanks for the chance to speak and live what we believe.
