The Legend of the Aspen Heart ♥️
High above Fish Lake, hidden among the aspens, a heart appears each fall.
As the mountains change from green to gold, one patch of aspens turns a brilliant shade of red—forming a heart against the mountainside.
And according to an old local legend, there is a love story behind it.
Long ago, when Paiute people lived throughout the Fish Lake Basin, a young Paiute brave fell deeply in love with the chief’s beautiful daughter.
But their love was forbidden.
The chief refused to allow them to be together, so the two would secretly meet in a special place hidden in the mountains above Fish Lake. Knowing they could never be together if they stayed, they made plans to run away.
Before they had the chance, the tribe went to war and the young brave was sent away to fight.
When the men returned, he was not among them.
Believing the man she loved had been lost, the heartbroken young woman climbed to their secret meeting place. There, according to the legend, she died of a broken heart.
Her people buried her there, hoping she might somehow find her love again beyond this life.
But the story wasn’t over.
Some time later, the young brave returned. He had survived, but had been badly injured and his journey home had taken longer than expected.
When he learned what had happened, he climbed the mountain to the place they had once shared. There, beside her resting place, he too passed away.
Was it from his injuries—or from a broken heart of his own?
No one knows.
He was buried beside his princess, together at last.
And legend says their love still leaves its mark on Fish Lake.
Every autumn, while the surrounding aspens turn yellow and gold, one patch turns deep red—forming a heart on the mountainside.
The Aspen Heart ♥️
A reminder of two people who loved each other so deeply that even the mountain remembers.
