“We enjoy stepping away to take a little bit of time, even if it’s only a couple of hours to have a little picnic.” says Ed. “This is what we do. It’s not romantic, romantic, romantic, whatever that means. But it’s what we do. It’s who we are.”

Ha-a-a-apy New Year 2023! We continue to enjoy talking with our guests each day at Butterfield Bed in Breakfast in Julian. In addition to wonderful conversations, we welcome every opportunity to provide classic small town hospitality beginning with breakfast each day, recommendations as to how to enjoy the day, and of course enjoying the seasonal changes throughout the year. Please spend a few moments enjoying the year round images of our traditional b&b in Whispering Pines, just a short distance from Main Street. Cheers! Dawn & Ed

…let it snow, let it snow, LET IT SNOW!!! Happy Holidays and a Merry Christmas from Butterfield Bed and Breakfast. Enjoy this short video from earlier today from just inside our front porch at our home next door to the b&b. Dawn and I have a rare day with no guests at our b&b, so we are enjoying time together in front of our woodstove at our house, talking and reading and listening to music. We are thankful each day, thankful for our guests, family and friends.

We’ve all heard “spring ahead” and “fall back” in reference to the time change each year…well, this weekend we move our clocks ahead one hour as we return to daylight saving time. The season of Spring returns one week later. Yay! Our daffodils are in bloom now, the lilacs are budding. SO!!! It’s time to return to Butterfield Bed & Breakfast. Enjoy slowing down awhile…walk our garden paths, find a spot to sit on our porch and hillside. Hike nearby trails around Julian. Linger awhile at wineries, apple cider and craft beer spots, and enjoy dining at a variety of restaurants. Visit many unique shops. And come back later to Butterfield, select a movie from our extensive collection. Hey!…how about a board game? Looking forward to seeing you soon. Ed & Dawn Glass

Ahhh…wintertime in Julian! Our first significant snowfall of the season at Butterfield Bed & Breakfast roared in yesterday. When Dawn and I moved here from the Bay Area in April 1999, it snowed as the moving van arrived and I said to myself “what have I DONE?!” Enjoy the photos. Please stay in touch with us. Merry Christmas to all from Julian’s Butterfield Bed & Breakfast! We have been quite busy hosting our wonderful b&b guests during the classic holiday month of December. Actually, Julian’s Christmas season always begins in November with the lighting of the 80 foot tall Christmas tree at Pioneer Park in town, on Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend.

This year, we have hosted many previous guests who had stayed here before. While this has been common during our 23 years as innkeepers, two couples were quite unique: both were here to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The first couple had last stayed at Butterfield during their honeymoon; the other couple stayed here for their first anniversary. WOW!!!! Welcome back! Another surprise just last week: Dawn and I are talking with first time Butterfield guests after breakfast, and the wife casually mentioned a previous company she worked for that is headquartered in the Bay Area, where Dawn and I lived forever prior to selling our home in Los Altos…the woman she had worked for was the wife of the couple who purchased our Los Altos home in early 1999.

Truly, it’s a small AND a wonderful world. Dawn and I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! To quote a favorite song from my younger days, “Accentuate the Positive”!

Love from Ed & Dawn

…and the month of April enjoys its 30th day! At Butterfield Bed and Breakfast, blooms are a constant enjoyment each day of April. Daffodils, lilacs, roses, wisteria, tulips, irises…apple blossoms, crabapple blossoms, Colorado redbud, vinca, viburnum…rosemary, blackberry, sage. Oak. Maple. Elm. WILDFLOWERS! Come and see Dawn and Ed, and share our passions for gardening, cooking, and hospitality.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!! 22 years today. No no, this is not our wedding anniversary, but the date of our arrival in Julian to take over ownership of Butterfield Bed and Breakfast. What a day it was, Tuesday April 6, 1999. I was on the road at 4AM to drive a 19 foot rental truck filled with garden plants in containers, and garden furniture. A fond farewell to our long time home in Los Altos, a 12 hour drive from the Bay Area to the mountains of San Diego County. Dawn would depart 2 hours later with her Subaru filled with our dog and cats, followed by friends caravanning down in vehicles filled with items not packed into the moving van that had been loaded up with our furniture and other belongings on Monday. We all slept that first night in Julian inside our empty house next door to the b&b, everyone in sleeping bags on the floor. And then the anticipation of next day's arrival of the moving van, and...

SNOW!!!! How exciting! WHAT was I thinking???

Throughout all of our years here as Innkeepers at Butterfield Bed and Breakfast, Dawn and I have been blessed with wonderful guests, thoughtful and interesting conversations, and ample opportunities to participate in the Julian community in so many ways. We thank everybody who has made our journey so satisfying. Ed & Dawn
