🌌 1,857 photos. 159 GB of data. A MacBook Air pushed to its limits. The result? 2 minutes, 33 seconds of aurora magic over Lake Kabetogama.
Between 8:45 PM on Oct 2 and 12:11 AM on Oct 3, 2025, I captured 1,857 photos of the northern lights—over 159 GB of data. The end result is a 2 minute, 33 second timelapse video that reveals the aurora moving gracefully across the sky above Voyageurs National Park.
While reviewing the images, adjusting color, compensating for the camera body and lens, reducing noise, selecting the right soundtrack, producing in Final Cut Pro, setting frame rates, cropping, and finally transcoding the final product—it occurred to me more than once that I may have bitten off more than I could chew. It took me two attempts at from start to before I was satisfied with the end result. My M2 MacBook Air was definitely pushed to its absolute limits pulling this together!
This sequence also features a soundtrack: “Echoes of Andromeda” by CharlVera, licensed via Pixabay. It adds an extra dimension to the movement of the aurora across the night sky.
