GREEN SAND BEACH
A hidden gem on the Big Island 🌿
Papakōlea Green Sand Beach is one of the very few green sand beaches in the world. Its unique color comes from olivine crystals formed by volcanic activity, giving the sand a soft, earthy green glow under the sun — subtle, yet truly unforgettable.
Getting there isn’t easy, but that’s part of the experience. The road is rugged and bumpy, and many visitors either hike in (about 2.5 miles each way) or choose to go with local drivers for a more comfortable ride.
Once you arrive, it’s absolutely worth it. You can take a refreshing swim in the ocean, or simply sit back and relax on the beach, soaking in the peaceful surroundings. It’s also a beautiful place to walk barefoot along the shoreline and explore the dramatic lava rock formations nearby.
✨ Travel Tips:
• Bring water, sunscreen, and good walking shoes
• No facilities on site — plan ahead
• Respect the land and avoid taking sand (it’s protected)
If you’re looking for something truly unique beyond the typical beaches, this is an adventure you won’t forget.
