There is a very special book in cottage West, it’s a journal really. On the front, it says adventure awaits along with a note from me inviting guests to tell me about their favorite books. It doesn’t get written in very often but when it does, it’s always a treat. I respond back and write a note as if the person who just wrote it can read it. Maybe they’ll come back maybe they’ll never see it. But it’s there waiting for them. The first note I ever received was from Paisley an aspiring author. The latest yesterday from a guest who loved interview with a vampire. It’s one of my greatest joys to connect with my guests in this way!

The end of July and early August are hot, hot, HOT! And sometimes the central a/c struggles. I walked into Cottage West yesterday and was horrified to discover it was 81 degrees inside. The a/c was pumping away, and the air coming out of the vents was barely cool.

I called an HVAC guy right away, because I had guests checking in early on the heels of a late check-out. Aieee! And then I reached out immediately to the guest, explained the situation and asked if they would come by, see if it would be acceptable, and if not, then I'd refund them in full.

Then I called in reinforcements to lug a window unit from the basement up to the kitchen window, and then put in another window unit in the back bedroom and started them to cooling.

The guests arrived and were so sweet and understanding. I arranged with them to put their pups in one room while I handled getting the HVAC guy in and out and the a/c back up to s***f. And here is her review. I have the best guests, I really do!

When I first began hosting, I saved every five-star review, taking screenshots and filing them by the year, month, day.

These days, with over 1,165 reviews, I don't need to do that. But I still love getting reviews like the one below. And while I won't make every single person who stays in my short-term rentals happy, I can (and do) my level best every single time.

Because hospitality and customer service go hand in hand. Give them what they need, BEFORE they need it.

Last year, I updated the wall of books. I filled holes, moved the shelves around, and painted it with chalkboard paint.

Then I wrote, “Love books?”

Silly me did not expect a response. I’m not sure why. But I’ve certainly been getting them!

This note makes my heart happy. When I was first planning cottage West, I remember being afraid that people wouldn’t like it or that they would think it was too quaint. Instead the guests who come here, love it. They see my heart.
