Snaps from Scotland in bloom a year ago! Traveled with my husband, brother, sister-in-law and our toddlers to experience our homeland. The memories of the flowers still linger with me, especially how they grew in every nook and crack we saw. Nature was quite happy over there and I still dream about the blue poppies.

Last month, my sister and sister-in-law (thank you Christina and Kalynn!) threw me a surprise anniversary party at , celebrating 10 years since I first touched flowers. What started out as small side hustle in flower shops and freelancing for other designers, turned into something that eventually grew into Floraloom.

So I got to thinking after of all the memories over this past decade, and here are 10 things I’ve learned in 10 years as a florist:

1. Partner with a trusted nursery

Source, rent, and build your foundation with knowledge “plant” people. Utilize nurseries for trees, grasses, and large structural plants. These are the bones of your installation and set the entire framework for what grows from there.

2. Layer, layer, layer

We build in multiple levels and hidden mechanics to create a true “growing” effect so florals, grasses, and plant material feel like they’ve been living and evolving together over time, not just placed.

3. Study real nature

Spend time observing how it actually grows: clustered moments, unexpected variation in height, and quiet monochrome pockets. Nature is never evenly distributed…and that’s the point.

Spring centerpiece mockups exploring chartreuse green, a little flash photography, and some behind-the-scenes raw footage from my garage. Never a dull moment over here.

Motherhood is teaching me to keep creating even if there is chaos and only short bursts of productivity. But the goal is to never completely stop doing the thing. Slow downs, pauses, and interruptions are par for the course. But sometimes I find that these in-between moments allow me the space to refine and recalibrate as an artist and business owner. And then I can show up better and more prepared for the next project.

Pretty pumped about local flower season here in Kansas City! I’m forever grateful for the flower farmers here who play a huge roll in the overall quality of my designs. They help educate, go to great lengths to source a specialty product I might need, and will even climb 20 foot ladders to pick me the perfect pear blossom branches for an installation.

I recently chatted with Colleen Payne the co-founder of (they open next week!) on the importance and growth of the flower grower community in Kansas City. You can read about it and watch our video chat over on my blog. Link listed in my bio.
