I'm excited to learn how to build my own dome home out of aircrete. That's light weight concrete that can be stacked like an igloo (and provide great insulation from heat or cold). Termites don't eat it, and mold doesn't like it either when we cover it with waterproofing sealant fabric.
I've been on planet Earth (actually 90% of the living space is Ocean -- not Earth -- so misperception) for 53 years and haven't learned to build my own home yet. That seems weird. Even birds know how to build a home.
I'm just learning to grow my own food in my new syntropic garden. I harvested my first sweet potato today. I have so much taro and basil that I get to take it to market this morning for the first time! The golden Poha berries are my favorite!
I would love to find a piece of land here on the Big Island that can be subdivided to create "sovereignty in community" -- an regenerative community of shared values where we all own a piece of land (for freedom and privacy) and we come together on the shared land for fun and fellowship (gardening, dinners, music and storytelling around the fire, workshops, pottery kiln, etc).
I imagine that if we can build our off-grid homes by hand, pouring our own aircrete bricks, then we can have more time to be the artists that I believe we all are when we allow ourselves the time and space to create. Technology today can make off-grid living quite luxurious if long hot showers qualify, if pest-free homes qualify, if eating out of the garden and farmer's market qualify, if having time to create to play and create art qualifies. I think it does. If dolphins can live that kind of quality life (play and rest all day), then why can't we figure it out? If you want to learn more about dolphin lifestyle, just read my latest book, "A Dolphin Named Destiny" and be reminded that paying rent is just a game we made up one day and the "rat race" is in service to it.
It's ironic (no pun intended) that iron(ic) man is happening here on Island this weekend -- we put most of our energy into how fast we can do something rather than the quality of the experience.
Wouldn't it be more fun and meaningful for women if men had a contest to see who was the best romancer instead? What if mean competed for the most heart-melting love poetry, serenades, foreplay moves, and creative dating instead? Did you know that lobsters stroke each other's legs for a few DAYS before making love? DAYS! Let's learn from the lobsters and host a hopeless romantic competition for eligible bachelors instead of watching lean sweaty men run a marathon, swim a couple of miles and bike for hours.
Bringing this monologue full circle -- efficiency doesn't not equal quality in our homes. It seems that we've become accustomed to the least expensive way to build large homes in the shape of square boxes on the smallest piece of land possible so it can be "affordable." A small dome home costs about $12,000 to build since its roof is included and no gutters necessary. I plan to trick mine out with solar panels, incinerating toilet, atomospheric water generator, hot tub, decks, and two more domes that connect for a total of 3. I expect to spend about $100,000.
5 acres of land just sold across the street for about $525,000. That means about 10 of us could own a 1/2 acre parcel for about $50,000.
Then, we would pay to have it rezoned and have permits granted for our off-the grid home designs.
It may sound like a lot of work for a few months, but when you compare it to how hard most of us work for 30 years to pay off a mortgage and forego the fun and freedom, I have to reconsider!
I'm excited about personally designing my own home with an emphasis on beauty (round corners), white canvas-like walls that invite self-expression, sky-lights, grounded round corners (no roof to blow off in storms of the future), and sovereignty from centralized electricity, sewer and water, so we're free to enjoy the quality of our lives the same way the birds do. When a home can be easily built or rebuilt, we can recover as a community quickly by working together.
We create our lives based on the stories we tell ourselves. I'm a dreamer and can dream up any reality I choose. I only pray to choose my story consciously!
Your supportive ideas and comments are welcome! No negative comments allowed as my dream is just being born -- like a bird without feathers yet -- it needs love and support not negativity.
Grateful for this moment and for all of you! Thank you for sharing it with me. Vyana
