This past weekend marked our seventh annual Le Getaway—an event people spell all kinds of ways, but has the same core concept: an intimate artist experience with camp activities, music workshops, and live performances at the Club Getaway sleepaway camp in the humble town of Kent, CT.
This year’s event featured members of Umphrey’s McGee, Medeski Martin & Wood, Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade, Lotus, and more performing unique duo sets and collaborations all weekend. Days were filled with community activities like the welcome drum workshop, led this year by Billy Martin; the Pub Hike (drinking at various keg stops in the woods) led by Club Getaway mainstay Bluto; Pedialyte Ping Pong (recovering from the Pub Hike); and the myriad adventure activities the 300-acre, lakeside property has to offer. Nights concluded with DJ sets in the more intimate Road House, a fully videomapped dining hall, and a campfire in the courtyard.
Now, how does a prog-rock band wind up with its own sleepaway camp-style festival?
Well, it all starts with two parents who met (and then married) at a sleepaway camp.
