Hurricane Milton is making landfall in the Sarasota, Florida area with 120 mph sustained winds, just south of Tampa Bay. That makes the storm surge a little lesser in the Tampa Bay area but will bring catastrophic storm surge to the same areas destroyed by hurricane Ian, as well as Sarasota. St. Petersburg will get the strongest part of the hurricane, though. Not much good news in there.

Breaking: Hurricane hunter aircraft just measured a barometric reading of 905 in Milton, the same as when it was at 180 mph yesterday. I expect the winds at the next advisory may be similar. Right now, it's at 165 mph, a category 5.

HURRICANE MILTON AT 5:00 PM: CATEGORY 5 WITH 180 MPH SUSTAINED WINDS.

"Residents in Florida should closely follow the orders from
their local emergency management officials, as Milton has the
potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record
for west-central Florida." National Hurricane Center quote from the 5 PM advisory

The first picture I took with my own camera back in 2016 at a beautiful garden and park on the shore of Lake Lure in the beautiful resort town of Chimney Rock, NC. You could say I have a personal connection to the place, as it's where we as a family spread my parent's ashes in a part of the park not in this picture. In the background you can see the business section of Chimney Rock, a nice little collection of shops where you could buy coffee or ice cream and sit and admire some of the most beautiful views in the world.
If the names of these places sound familiar, it's because this past week it has been in the news as ground zero of the wrath of Hurricane Helene, where violent flash floods destroyed the resort town, the park, and virtually everything else nearby, including the highway that went through town. The destruction was thorough. The bottom picture is actually Lake Lure after the flooding, and all the debris floating in the Lake is basically what remains of Chimney Rock.
Please remember and pray for those who have lost so much, as there is a long and painful rebuilding ahead.

Pay attention to the tropics. There is a new storm that may be forming in a few days in the same spot where Hurricane Helene was born. It will likely enter the Gulf of Mexico and head north. The entire Gulf coast needs to be alert. Again.
