The Art of Smart Timing
Key Biscayne is a year-round vacation destination, and even if the water is a little chillier during the winter months, you’ll still be able to swim. Summer, however, is low season on the island, since the snowbirds have gone back north for the summer. This is when you may find restaurants with more limited hours, but it’s also when the beaches will be quietest.
Around Thanksgiving, the holiday season and spring break in March and April, crowds really swell on the beach and in town. You can often score deals on accommodations during the summer months, but be prepared for sticky humidity and tropical heat. The weather is mildest from December through February.
Getting There
Miami International Airport is the major hub for domestic and international flights and, at just 20 minutes away, is the closet airport to Key Biscayne.
Getting Around
You could easily plan to just get around Key Biscayne by bike during your stay, but it’s far more practical to rent a car so you can easily venture off the island to explore downtown Miami, South Beach and farther afield.
Parking at the two parks on the island is relatively inexpensive (less than $10 per day), compared to other places in Miami, where you could easily spend the same in an hour. But outside of strip malls and restaurants, there’s not a whole lot of public parking on the island.
The Miami-Dade Transit Authority has a good bus route that can carry you throughout the island to most of the attractions. And while sidewalks are mostly stroller-friendly on the island, the Florida heat and humidity makes getting around on foot quite uncomfortable for much of the year.
