This week, the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners voted to let the Big Pine Key and No Name Key Habitat Conservation Plan expire on June 30. Rather than request a one-year extension, the Commission accepted a recent letter from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as the basis for a new conservation policy for Big Pine and No Name Key.

Last Stand spoke at the meeting and raised a number of concerns, including questions about the enforceability of proposed protections, the loss of biological monitoring requirements, questions about how key development limits will be enforced without a change to the Land Development Code.

We do not think this conversation is over, and we are looking into what options are available to us next.
