Our neighbors are so talented! This year Keystone Heights is celebrating 100 years, come check out our historic hometown!
The following is an excerpt from the reminiscence of Keystone Heights by Anne Walrath. She wasn’t born until 1934 so the early history is all oral history learned from parents and grandparents .
“Telephone service and a whooping crane named Andy moved into town
about 1930. Andy, adopted by a man named Jack Buck, followed his owner a discreet three paces behind and amused the townfolk nipping Jack in
the seat of the pants when Jack bent over to tie a shoelace or to pick
up something. The telephones were almost as much fun as Andy was. “
The Walwraths were very active bird watchers, and as the whooping crane is very distinctive, I believe Andy was correctly identified.
Then, while reading through all of the city clerks correspondence, I ran across this letter.

Mr. Wm. S. Pierce
1401 Lipscomb St.
Fort Worth, Texas
Dear Mr. Pierce,
I am instructed to write you regarding action which has become necessary for the Town Council to take with “Andy.” Complaints have come in from so many people that it has become necessary to confine him, an action the Council has authorized. They felt that you should be notified, and your wishes consulted regarding his upkeep and care.
He not only is very destructive of property, but has also been molesting pedestrians in a way that has made this action seem imperative. We are placing him in the pen on the hotel lawn, which formerly contained the ring-neck pheasants, pending your reply.
You will be pleased to learn that the contract for the completion of the road was let yesterday. I hope it will be ready for your use in returning to Keystone Heights.
Hoping that you and Mrs. Pierce are both well and enjoying your visit, and with kindest regards to you both, I am
Very truly yours,
Clerk of Council
I decided to write a short story geared towards fourth graders that could be printed and handed out in the souvenir bag at the field trip.
This is why Andy is being included in our beautiful new mural .
