A quick note from our "sister property" — an odd term in this case, as Richard is actually Marilyn's brother. Anyway... a rare bike week opening is up for grabs!

🏍️ RALLY OPENING ALERT 🏍️

A rare week-long spot just opened up during Rally Week! The Calamity Jean Cabin was just cancelled by someone who'd had it reserved since before last year's rally.

If you’ve been looking for a great place to stay, close enough to the action, but far away for some peace — this is your chance!

Book now, or tell your friends, before it’s gone!

Once again we are saying, Goodbye 2024 and starting to make plans for 2025. If you have any thoughts about spending most of the summer of 2025in the beautiful Black Hills, we are looking for helpers. Please give us a PM if you might want to have a discussion about what all it involves. We do have complete hookups for an RV, and we can discuss how that works for our helpers.

I haven't posted in a while because Buffalo Rock Lodge and Cabins has had a very busy summer, so far. But Lyndy Ireland from Triangle Ranch B and B gave me the idea to share some history with you all. So here goes:

In 1932, my grandfather, C. C. Gideon, my mom's father, bought a section of land previously owned by the Hoffman family, who had homesteaded it. He and his wife Elma had come to the Hills in 1918 to supervise construction of the State Game Lodge. In 1927 President Coolidge took his summer vacation at the Lodge and it was during that summer that plans were made to start construction of Mt Rushmore. Grandpa Gideon knew about the plan and also knew that the Hoffman place had several places on it that had views of the future Shrine to Democracy, so when the opportunity rose he acted on it and bought the entire property. Grandpa had hoped to build something very special on the property but his one effort, launched in 1952 failed due to lack of water. Fast forward to 1992, the Oakes family had an opportunity to purchase 13 acres with the Rushmore view that had been part of the original ranch, and we jumped on it. 1996 we started planning and July 2, 1999, we opened to our first guests. This summer marked our 25th anniversary. Still going strong and very much enjoying the added "Glamping" Cabins, too.

Guests sometimes giggle when I point out the portable heaters in the cabins, when it is in the 80s for day time highs. But tonight, on August 13th, the low temp will be about 47 degrees. Those heaters will be appreciated.

Gorgeous sunset over the "fellas" tonight. A nice end to a day that was hotter than a stolen tamale. 🥵

We may have six inches of snow on the ground, but we can't help believing that summer is right around the corner.

Happy New Year, friends and family! 🎆 Reservations are now open for the 2023 summer season.
