Last night, a total lunar eclipse rose straight out of the clouds at the summit of Haleakalā, deep red and dark at first, then brightening into a full, glowing moon as it climbed higher. Above 10,000 feet, you are above the weather. Above the noise. Just the sky.

Nights like this are part of why people fall in love with this island and keep planning their next trip back.

Aloha and happy Wednesday. There is a particular kind of happiness that only exists on the Road to Hāna, and it involves a warm loaf of banana bread eaten out of the paper with the windows down. The families along that road have been baking it for decades, using apple bananas grown right there in the valleys, and every stand swears theirs is the best. They are all a little bit right. Beyond banana bread you will find fresh coconut split open in front of you, huli huli chicken, smoothies made from fruit picked that morning, and shave ice in the most unexpected places. Bring cash in small bills, because many stands do not take cards and cell service is unreliable out there. Pull over only where it is safe and legal, never on a blind curve or a one lane bridge. These small stands are how many East Maui families make their living, so buying from them matters more than you might realize. Take your rubbish with you. Mahalo nui loa and drive gently out there.

A stop at the Garden of Eden on the Road to Hana is always a little magical. 🌿 Visit the beautiful peacocks, and if you’re lucky, they may put on a spectacular show for you!

If you choose to feed them, just remember to give them plenty of space and let them come to you. Respect their space, and you might be rewarded with a beautiful display of feathers and personality. 🦚

Aloha from the middle of the island, where the mountains close in and everything turns impossibly green. ʻĪao Valley State Monument holds the Kūkaʻemoku, the ʻĪao Needle, a stone pinnacle rising more than a thousand feet from the valley floor and wrapped in cloud most afternoons. It is breathtaking.

Aloha, ocean lovers. Along the South Maui shoreline near Mākena Landing lies a stretch of lava reef so reliably full of honu that everyone simply calls it Turtle Town. On a calm August morning you can slip in from the sandy entry, swim out over the reef, and find green sea turtles grazing on algae, resting in the coral ledges, and rising slowly for a breath of air. It is one of the most moving things you can do in the water here. Please share their home properly. Stay at least ten feet away, never touch or chase, and never block a turtle’s path to the surface, because they need to breathe. Float still and let them come to you. That is when the magic happens. Go early before the wind picks up, wear mineral sunscreen only, and enter over sand rather than coral. If the water is cloudy or the surf is up, choose another day. Protecting this place is what keeps it worth visiting. Mālama i ke kai, care for the sea. Mahalo nui loa.

The Bamboo Forest along the Road to Hana feels like stepping into another world. Towering green stalks sway overhead, sunlight filters through the canopy, and every breeze fills the forest with the peaceful sound of bamboo gently knocking together. It’s one of Maui’s most magical places. A reminder to slow down, take it all in, and enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
