WORLD SEA TURTLE DAY: HATCHLING SEASON

Happy World Sea Turtle Day! Since we just talked about our turtles in Hawaii (check out our post on May 23rd!) we wanted to take a moment to talk about hatchling season!

Here in Hawaii, sea turtle hatchling season starts in June and runs all the way until October. Our mama turtles work hard during these months, laying 2-3 clutches of 75-100 eggs per clutch! Then, about 2 months later, hatchlings are born! These new hatchlings will make their way out to sea as fast as possible in order to start their lives. So with hatchling season beginning, here are a few reminders to help keep them safe!

🐢 If you see a turtle on the beach, keep your distance! This is especially important during hatchling season because a mama turtle digging its nest may stop if she feels threatened. This includes not using the light from phones, or flash photography.

🐢 Live near the beach? Be sure to turn off any porch or outdoor lights at night and keep those blinds closed! Hatchlings use the moon to make it out to sea so any other sources of light could confuse them!

🐢 Don’t drive on the beach and make sure to stay on marked trails. Sea turtle nests are typically much higher than the high tide line and are very fragile!

🐢 Think you see a turtle nest? Please call the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline at 888-256-9840!
