This month marks the 50th anniversary of Jockey's Ridge State Park, so we thought It was only fitting to share of photograph of Carolista Cabell Fletcher Golden for this week's .

in 1973, Carolista stepped into the path of a bulldozer that was destined to turn the long beloved dunes of Jockey’s Ridge into an apartment complex. Baum refused to move, and when the driver left the machine, she took the distributor cap to keep it from its intended purpose.
What followed was a burgeoning effort to preserve the dunes, spearheaded by Baum herself, which rapidly gained support from around the Outer Banks and beyond. Baum helped form the People to Preserve Jockey’s Ridge which raised money and organized petitions to get state lawmakers to recognize Jockey’s Ridge as a unique natural feature to the area. After a year of tremendous pressure and frequent visits from Baum herself the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation issued a report in favor of saving the dunes, and a year later it was declared a National Natural Landmark with funds being set aside to create the park in 1975.

A killer whale was spotted off the coast of Kitty Hawk, catching researchers by surprise! Officials say orcas are rarely seen in North Carolina waters, even well offshore.

The confirmed sighting is the first among the survey team since efforts began in the area five years ago.
