🌍 Earth is drifting through the ancient debris trail of Comet 8P/Tuttle — and the sky is responding.
Welcome to the Ursid meteor shower, the final celestial show of the year.

❄️ Best seen from the Northern Hemisphere, the Ursids are quieter and more subtle than the Geminids — usually around 10 meteors per hour — but they’re famous for surprise outbursts that reward patient skywatchers.

✨ Best viewing window: late night to just before dawn on December 21–22, when the sky is at its darkest and stillest.

🌙 2025 is special: a thin crescent Moon sets early, leaving beautifully dark, moon-free skies — ideal conditions for spotting shooting stars.

🔭 Where to look: face north toward the Little Dipper (Ursa Minor). No telescope needed — just warm layers, a dark location, and 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust.

Step outside. Look up.
The year’s final cosmic farewell is overhead.

Happy skygazing ✨

One of North Carolina's most magical little coastal Christmas towns is the town of Manteo, NC. You’ll find the waterfront lit with bright white lights, wreaths on every lamp post, and a huge Christmas tree on the docks. The Elizabethan Gardens turn into a glowing winter walk with thousands of lights during WinterLights. Downtown shops stay open late, serving cocoa while boats decorated with lights line the harbor. You can watch the town’s Christmas parade, visit the Pioneer Theater for holiday movies, and enjoy festive displays around Roanoke Island. The whole town feels warm, cheerful, and full of small-town Christmas charm.

Not all Outer Banks restaurants serve local shrimp; some opt for imported varieties due to cost and logistical considerations. It is advisable to inquire about the origin of the shrimp before ordering.

Make sure you ask for NC Shrimp. Unfortunately not all restaurants on the Outer Banks serve them.

Did you know Shrimp have seasons?

Many of us assume our seafood is always available but shrimp are a seasonal crop. The coastal waters of North Carolina are home to three native shrimp species—brown, white, and pink—each offering its own unique flavor profile throughout their respective seasons.

Thanks to the dedication of skilled crews, specialized gear, and a commitment to responsible fishing practices, these shrimp are responsibly harvested. This means you're not just getting a tasty meal; you're supporting a clean, sustainable catch that benefits both our environment and the vibrant working waterfronts of North Carolina.

In season now, NC Brown Shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus).

Enjoy delicious North Carolina Brown Shrimp while you can! Let us know your favorite way to eat NC Shrimp.

🌕🍓 Full Strawberry Moon — June 11, 2025

On the night of June 11, skywatchers around the world will be treated to the Full Strawberry Moon — the final full moon of spring or the first of summer, depending on the solstice.

🔭 Why is it called the "Strawberry Moon"?
The name originates from Native American Algonquin tribes who used this full moon as a seasonal marker for the ripening of wild strawberries. While the moon doesn’t actually turn red or pink, its low position on the horizon during moonrise can sometimes give it a warm, golden, or even rosy hue due to atmospheric conditions.

🌍 When and where to watch:
You can observe it rising just after sunset and shining bright all night. For the best view, head to an area with a clear horizon and minimal light pollution. It will appear larger when near the horizon due to the "moon illusion."

✨ Fun fact:
June's full moon is also known in some cultures as the “Honey Moon,” a term that may be linked to the tradition of June weddings and the belief that this is the sweetest time of year.

📸 Don’t forget to grab your camera—this moon makes for a spectacular photo opportunity!
