This is a bucket list item for me and we don’t even have OBX renters this week!! If you want to see a sea turtle nest being excavated you should head down to Buxton!!

Buxton Sea Turtle Nest Excavation Announcement!

Join park scientists and rangers as they excavate a sea turtle nest on Tuesday, August 25th at 11am at the Old Lighthouse Lifeguarded Beach.

Park at the Old Lighthouse Beach parking lot by 1030am, and walk down the access path to the beach. Walk south (right) of the lifeguard stand for 0.08 miles to the site. Bring water and sun protection. See you all out there!

Did you know we have resident gopher tortoises living just behind our Florida home? 🐢 It breaks my heart to see that these incredible animals are continuing to decline in numbers.

Every time we visit, one of our kids’ favorite traditions is quietly looking for the tortoises from a respectful distance. It’s such a special reminder of the amazing wildlife that calls this area home.

We’re so lucky to share this little corner of Florida with them, and we hope they’ll be around for generations to come. ❤️

Florida's gopher tortoise just received troubling news 😥

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has reclassified the gopher tortoise as critically endangered, citing decades of population declines driven largely by habitat loss. Florida, home to one of the species' largest remaining populations, was singled out as an area where numbers have fallen significantly since the 1960s.

Known as a keystone species, gopher tortoises dig burrows that provide shelter for more than 350 other kinds of animals. While the reptiles are protected under state law, conservation experts say preserving and restoring their habitat will be critical to their long-term survival.
