Due to impacts expected from Hurricane Erin, a local State of Emergency has been issued for all areas of Dare County and Mandatory Evacuation Order has been issued for Hatteras Island. In addition, a Tropical Storm Watch and and Storm Surge Watch is in effect for Dare County.

• Lifeguard stands have been removed from the beach and Ocean Rescue is operating via roving patrol.

• Double red flags are flying meaning the ocean is CLOSED to swimmers due to dangerous conditions and life-threatening rip currents.

•Trash collection for the Town of Kitty Hawk will operate on a regular schedule.

Currently, there is no mandatory evacuation order for Kitty Hawk. However, those staying on the oceanside or oceanfront should have a go-bag ready in case they need to leave their property quickly. After dark on Wednesday, August 20, occupants should remain in their properties as travel is expected to become hazardous.

If you wish to move vehicles to higher ground, vehicles may be parked in the gravel lot at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church located at 301 West Kitty Hawk Road and at Kitty Hawk Police Department building located at 5200 North Croatan Highway in the rear parking lot behind Bear Drugs.

7/25/24 6:11 AM: Good morning from Newport, where we're starting the day off at 81 degrees. Periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected today, and a few strong storms are possible posing a risk for a few damaging wind gusts. Yet again, heavy rain and flash flooding are the biggest hazard. A Flood Watch is in effect area-wide until midnight.

Q: How do I assist someone who is caught in a rip current?
A: Many people have died trying to rescue rip current victims. Here are the best ways to help:

✔️ Alert the lifeguard. If no lifeguard is available, call 911.
✔️ Yell to the victim to swim parallel to the shoreline until they escape the pull.
✔️ If possible, throw the rip current victim something that floats: a boogie board, pool float, etc.
✔️Do not enter the water and do not lose sight of the victim.

Remember, many would-be rescuers have drowned trying to help others. Don't become a victim while trying to help someone else. Know your location and call for help.
