Labor Day may be the unofficial end of summer, but at the Outer Banks, some of the best beach days of the year are still ahead.

This is one of our favorite times to be in OBX. The weather is still beautiful, the summer crowds have started to thin out, and so many of the things we love most about the Outer Banks are still going strong.

The restaurants are open, the fishing is great, the beach is a little quieter, and there’s still plenty of warm weather left to enjoy.

There’s just something about this time of year in Kitty Hawk that’s hard to beat.

Whether you’re spending the holiday at the beach, at home with family, or squeezing in one last taste of summer, we hope you have a wonderful Labor Day.

Happy Labor Day from our family at Slaycation.

Fishing days don’t get much better than this! Parker his brother and some buddies headed to the blue waters of the Gulf Stream for an AWESOME day of fishing. In all released 6 sailfish and came back with a box full of dolphin (Mahi-Mahi)!! Huge shoutout to BI-OP-SEA Sportfishing at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center for putting us on the fish!

This is truly what we love about the Outer Banks. We’ve been coming here our entire lives, and last night we got to experience something for the very first time.

We had just arrived at the beach when some friends told us a nearby sea turtle nest was about to “boil” — the term used when a group of hatchlings begins emerging from the nest. So, of course, off we went.

We were lucky enough to witness the first night of these tiny turtles making their way out of the nest and beginning their journey toward the ocean.

Everyone had to be extremely careful to keep the beach as dark as possible so the hatchlings wouldn’t become disoriented. I snapped this photo using a special low-light setting on my phone so the screen and flash wouldn’t add unnecessary light. It’s a little blurry and grainy, but it captured the moment exactly as we experienced it.

More than 30 turtles made their way toward the water last night, and there are believed to be another 50 or so still waiting to emerge.

A huge shoutout to the N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles) volunteers who were there carefully watching over the nest and helping give these little turtles the best possible start.

After a lifetime of coming to the OBX, it’s pretty incredible that there are still completely new experiences waiting for us here. This is one we’ll never forget.

In our family, it’s almost impossible to get through a family gathering without eventually hearing a story about childhood vacations at the Outer Banks.

Stories like Parker’s grandfather covering the windows of a rental house with aluminum foil because there were no shades and he thought the house was too bright. Or the night Madelaine sang “Boogie Fever” at karaoke at the Carolinian as a kid, a performance that is still chuckled about years afterward.

Those beach weeks helped shape our childhoods, and decades later, they remain some of our most cherished family memories.

We also know that not every family has the opportunity to experience a week like that. Because of that, each year we reserve one week at Slaycation to gift to a family who simply needs time to rest, reconnect, celebrate, heal, or just breathe.

We call it Pearl Week at Slaycation.

Our daughter Margaux’s name means “pearl,” and to us, pearls represent something rare, strong, and beautiful. The memories made during Pearl Week we hope will feel the same way.

We know there are families carrying more than their fair share, walking through a difficult season, or spending so much of their lives taking care of everyone else a week at the beach may simply be out of reach.

We’ve already received some incredible nominations for next year’s Pearl Week, and reading the stories people have shared has made this tradition mean even more to us.

If someone comes to mind, a family who has gone above and beyond for others or is walking through a difficult season — we invite you to nominate them.

All nominations are reviewed privately by our family, and the selected family is notified personally. We approach this respectfully and with deep care.

These beaches have given so much to us. Pearl Week is a tradition we are committed to continuing every year, and sharing Slaycation in this way is one small way we hope to pass that gift forward.

We’ll include the nomination link below.

Okay… THIS might be the most out-of-this-world thing our Slaycation Cam has ever caught! A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Cape Canaveral, flew up the East Coast and passed right by Kitty Hawk.

This morning’s launch sent 29 Starlink satellites into orbit and marked a record-breaking 37th flight for the Falcon 9 booster!

You truly never know what you’ll see from the front porch at Slaycation!

One of Slaycation’s most talked-about features is… the elevator!

Not because it’s fancy, but because the glass window inside gives you a moving view of life under the sea. The mural begins in the ocean depths, and as the elevator climbs, you rise through the water until you reach the top floor… you’re surfing in the waves!

We thought it was a fun detail when we bought the house, but guests LOVE it. It’s weird, whimsical, totally unexpected, and somehow became one of those little things people remember long after their stay.

Come for the beach. Stay for the elevator lore! 🤣

A little before and after from ‘The Margaux’ at Slaycation!

Nothing big, just a few updates to brighten things up, add some coastal charm, and give the room a fresh new look. We also keep a Pack ’n Play in this room for our littlest house guests. It actually happens to be Margaux’s very first one, which she has officially outgrown! 😭😭

Sometimes the little changes and thoughtful additions make the biggest difference!

BIG NEWS! It seems like everything got more expensive this year, but your beach week doesn’t have to.

Our first year at Slaycation OBX was more successful than we ever imagined. From March to November, we were fully booked for nearly 35 straight weeks without a single week open.

We’ve heard more than once that we should raise our rates for 2027. But guess what… we’re not!

We’re still learning, improving and working to make Slaycation a place families love coming back to. So our 2027 rates are now live and we’ve decided NOT to raise prices on 98% of our weeks.

Many peak spring and summer weeks are already booked by loyal returning guests, and it means so much to see familiar faces choosing to continue making OBX memories at Slaycation.

If you’re thinking about a 2027 stay, now is a great time to start planning. Upcoming 2026 guests still have the first opportunity to reserve the same week for 2027, so additional weeks will become available if they choose not to rebook.

Have a week in mind? Check available dates through Joe Lamb Jr. & Associates or send us a message for details!

From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for making our first year owning Slaycation such a success!

We know 300 may not break the internet, but for our little beach house in Kitty Hawk, it feels pretty incredible.

It’s somehow only been five months since we took over Slaycation, and what started as a slightly crazy family adventure has already become more successful… and more fun than we ever imagined!

In our first year as owners, Slaycation was fully booked for 35 straight weeks. We’ve gotten to welcome so many wonderful families through our doors, and one of the coolest parts has been seeing some of them already choose to come back again.

And now 300 of you are following along with us.

We’re really proud of what we’ve built in just five months, but mostly we’re grateful for the guests, friends, OBX lovers and followers who have cheered us on, stayed with us and helped make Slaycation what it is.

Thank you for being one of the first 300. 🩷 We like to hope we’re just getting started!!

Everyone always talks about the “OBX Magic,” and it seems like every family has that one Outer Banks story they’ll never forget. For us, it was a day in 2019 that became known as the “Slaybaugh Slam!”

What started as a normal day fishing at Nags Head Pier turned into one of those once-in-a-lifetime days where the fish kept coming... and coming... and coming!

Before it was over, Parker, his dad, brother and sister had each caught a King Mackerel from the pier!

Many people fish for a lifetime without ever catching one from a pier — and somehow, in a single day, a dad and his three kids all caught fish of a lifetime. We don’t know if something like that had ever happened before, but it definitely hasn't happened since... That's OBX magic!

Somewhere along the way, a family vacation becomes stories you tell for the rest of your life.

What’s the one OBX memory your family will never forget? Lets see photos if you have them!
